Very Angry IRN

Post by Nafito »

hi all im new to this forum and the wide world of IRN, i have always wanted 1 and my girlfriends dad offered me his son's one that his son no longer took care of and just put it in the avery with all the other birds and killed a few of those birds. So i took him up on the offer and took the bird home gave her a nice cage food water toys, set it all up and tried to get her out of the box into the cage as i grabbed her (without gloves heard that IRN shouldnt be handled like that) she turned and latched onto my finger taking a lil chunk out of it, its only been a day with me on its own i know it will take time but will the bird ever come around and play nice, i believe my girlfriends had his been mean to it since its killed a few of his birds so im worried the bird may never come around into liking and accepting me. please help any tips will be great

it doesnt pin but it does sit on its swing or perchs and watchs my every move and it i move close to where he his he will move away as far as possible untill u move away and he will slowly go back to the perch or swing.

Yep .. don't be disheartened. Our Kai when I first brought him home did exactly the same thing.. He was a 1 year old aviary bird, and he took a massive chunk out of my thumb when I tried to move him from the travel cage into his new permanent cage.

We clipped his wings straight away and just kept working with him, making progress (all be it small) every day. 6 months later he was very comfortable with us, would let us step him up, he would climb all over us and let us kiss him, he would share snacks with us and was very tame a year later, talking and socialising with us. The only thing we couldn't get him use to was being patted, and he was forever nervous of your hands going around behind him.

But he is what I would call a tame bird, just not as tame as a bird handraised from a baby. So it can be done, its just going to take time, patience and persistence. Trust takes a while.

Good Luck

well i got home yesterday from work and things were going great i was able to put my hand in the cage and also in the cage and touch her feet, but then i took her to the vet to get her wings clipped and getting her out of the cage to the traveling cage another chunck out of my finger (same finger) got it all done came back and we are back at step one moves away as far as she can from me and gives me the look but no pinning. (puffs her chest out and then streches her neck as far as she can foward wards me) she is taking to apples and grapes just doesnt eat infront of me or out of my hand but it will take time.
ill be posting pics of her in the cage be sure to check them out

Thanks for the tips kyria

AH, IRN, have a tendency to strike the same spot once they have drawn blood-LOL

I got my 1st gash during step up training. Bite right at the cuticle of my left pointing finger -- OUCH

I cured Threio of biting by using my fist every time I felt threaten of a bite I would make a fist and let Threio bite the back of my hand or knuckles. (OBVIOUSLY I AM NOT RECOMMENDING PUNCHING HERE-LOL)

If you can get your FID into the tub, that is a great place to work on Step-Up now that the wings are clipped.
