Post by countrygal_cc »

Hello I was wanting to get advice on my ringneck cupcake. I have had cupcake since May I am not sure what age cupcake is 8 months? I am curious to know if a ringneck stays at a certain pattern my cupcake is getting mean as a snake... Into everything will not be still for anything always wanting to bite my feet or shoes. I try to get cupcake to be still and she won't. Cupcake is also biting holes in my shirt wanting to chew on everything. What can I do will cupcake always be like this also as soon as I put cupcake in cage she screams over and over and I have to cover her cage what can I do??? Misty

I am interested to see what people write because Fonz is doing the same thing..I guess its part of their inquisitive nature, chewing, i give her loads of things to chew but nothing satisfies her... I know i have offered no words of wisdom but look forward to reading the responses you get.. Good luck!

Hello,
Our IRN is a female. And I had to laugh when you said your cupcake is mean as a snake. I think this is a basic personality trait for IRN females. Our Luna thinks the kitchen is hers and bites toes and feet when we enter her kitchen. IRNs are not a lap bird and are not cuddly by nature. They are very independant. So it is important to hold her and just get her used to being held and stroke her on her head and neck. And when she stops protesting and trying to bite and relaxes, then you can put her back on her perch. Cupcake will get more tame and even learn to enjoy getting affection from you. She should be taught to step up on your finger or a perch. All of this will take time and patients, but she will be more bonded to you and will even take food from you. And the females are more aggressive and dominant. But they are good talkers and once tamed and allowing you to handle her, she will make a good little companion. And our Luna would rather have our stuff to chew on then her parrot toys. It is becouse she sees us useing our stuff but not touching her toys. So if we don't want her toys, then she doesn't either. She hasn't got a clue that she is a bird. And all of our shirts have Luna holes in them. LOL! So when she bites or screams you have to ignore it and then go to her when she is being good. Sounds like she is just being a normal little bratty girl. And she just wants everything you have and claims your space as hers, so she does this by biteing toes. Her chewing is normal behavior. All parrots are chewers. Cupcake would enjoy haveing things to shred, and foraging for her food. And give her bells to ring and play with. They like the noise. This may help to distract her from getting into stuff. Luna is the same way. In fact she says " whatcha doin??? Get out of that !! "" I hope this helps.

Cupcake's behaviour

Post by Janet »

Hi, One of my birds, Floss, is more inclined to bite than the other, Bird (I think Floss is a girl and Bird is a boy but I will have to wait and see because they are too young yet). But I have to say that both my birds can be quite affectionate. If I say "Parrot kisses" Bird presses his beak against my lips or 'preens' my face. Both parrots like to sit on me and preen my face or hair. The one thing they won't put up with is me giving them a scratch like other parrots and cockatoos seem to like. But if they are scared, they hide under my ponytail or snuggle into my neck. I got them to do this by getting them out of their cage first thing in the morning and spending some time with them sitting and climbing on me.
Regards, Janet.
