Yellow Hen & Blue Cock

Post by lovemybirds »

What would the babies be, if you bred them?

I have bred birds before, and am looking at maybe breeding IRN's. I bought a big aviary last week!

I have found a Yellow hen and a blue cock, but was wondering what I would get. I haven't actually gotten them yet, so don't know anymore than their colouring.

Thanks for your help!

Assuming no splits (hidden genes) on the birds, you will get all Green birds as follows:

Blue male x Lutino hen
=50% Green/Blue/Lutino males
=50% Green/Blue hens

However, if the female is split Blue, you will get as follows:

Blue male x Lutino/Blue hen
=25% Blue/Lutino males
=25% Green/Blue/Lutino males
=25% Blue hens
=25% Green/Blue hens

If the male is split Lutino and the hen is split Blue, you will get as follows:

Blue/Lutino male x Lutino/Blue hen
=12.5% Blue/Lutino males
=12.5% Green/Blue/Lutino males
=25% Albino males and females
=25% Lutino/Blue males and females
=12.5% Blue hens
=12.5% Green/Blue hens

As you can see, having splits on your birds is a big advantage as far as putting out different colors.

The "/" symbol denotes a split. The gene is carried but is not visible.

Hope that helps.

I think I have figured out my own answer.

Babies would be visually green but split for blue????

Now, would the parentage of the yellow hen & blue cock, come into the calculation at all?
