Spit and co.

Hi, i was previously on another forum for Ringnecks and was told to check this one out. I'm a photography student, and i share my house with my partner, two fancy rats, and Spit, a green ringneck. my boyfriend decided to get a pet bird a few months after we moved in together. he searched for weeks and couldnt find the right bird for him. we went into a pet shop in town and saw two ringnecks in a cage so he decided it was the bird for him. we went in a week later to buy him and discovered the two had been seperated for "fighting".

i'm here, because from the word go, Spit has been a huge problem for us. He's slowly getting better, but we get stuck with some behaviour problems he has. i've never been a bird owner before, but i think my partner has. so i'm lost, and i spend the majority of my time with Spit so i need advice from people that know what they are talking about (unlike the guy we brought him from).

if i can, ill try and post regularly, so i hope i get to know a few of you and get some good advice =)

Hi ryelle welcome to the forum!

Any questions just ask away. I am sure someone here would be able to help you or give you ideas. There are a lot of people on here that are very pationate of their birds and will only be too willing to point you in the right direction.
I have a few Ringies to. Mostly aviary birds but I do have one little girl I handraised a Lutino named Jasper.
Would love to see pics of Spit and the rest of your pets!

Heres some photos of Spit and my little ratty boys. hehe you gota love em all even though they can drive me round the bend. If you are scared of rats dont look!!!

This is Spit - the little terror in the house

He looks quite handsome there me thinks lol. Thats him being cheeky. If we leave the door open for more than a second to put his food or whatever in then he sneaks out and runs back and forth along the doorway.

Heres Sidian (Sid). He's one of my ratty boys. Hes a Blue satin rex, hes got dumbo ears so it makes him look sad and dopey. Hes a nervous wreck and was a little scared of the camera.

aand this is Harvey. He's the second love of my life. Hes a hooded rat and the first one i got. Hes so tame and lovely. This was taken a while ago and hes a lot older and slower now. He just loves a cuddle instead of running about like he used to.

Wow your fid is lovely and your rats are so cute i also have two male rats one champagne rex and one champagne and beige smooth both with big pink eyes lol

hehe thank you. i looove rats. they are such good pets even tho they have bad rep

dunno if Spit is male or female but he/she is a looker. hes started getting tiny black feathers around the sides of his lower beak so i dunno if that means hes male? or do females get them too?

if its under the beak i think it may be a ring but dont hold me to that i might be waaaaaay wrong lol how old is spit they dont get a ring until a certain age.
Yeah rats have a very bad rep but they are amazing mine are from two seperate packs and the older one took care of the young one as he has a repiritory infection (i took him from a petshop that was keeping their rats in damp conditions and am currently trying to get the rspca to do something) they live together in a huge cage. here is a link to where i put their pictures if your interested in having a look the cage is abit bare on that picture as it was the first day we had it lol http://indianringneck.com/board/viewtop ... ght=#41402

WOW!!! your cage is AMAZING! Harvey has a big cage, and Sid is in a little one which is why i want them in the big one. Sid has bad skin and i think if i can get Harvey to groom him itl help him out. Harveys cage always looks bare. he doesnt play with toys - only newspaper.

i hope spit is getting a ring ^_^ everyone think hes amazing cus hes green and theyve never seen a fully green parrot before. lol its funny

he is just over a year and a half, should be two in june/july time. not totally sure though

Yeah they are spoilt just like billy he has a big cage too lol http://www.indianringneck.com/board/vie ... ght=#42079 there is a picture on there the cage you can just see the edge of was the cage we bought him in so a little upgrade lol.
With the rats we just put them straight together and they got on really well started playing instantly

daaammnn. harveys almost two and really stubborn. he thinks im his property, so hes over protective. he tries to beat sid up, but i spray him with a bottle and he stops to groom himself (haha). tis funny, cus he fluffs himself up and waddles from side to side like a sumo wrestler.

woah! your bird cage is HUGE too!! i only have a tiny house, and its full of animal cages. the cage we used to have spit in wasnt as big as your old one i dont think. we managed to find a second hand on which is big enough for £40 from a pet shop.

took us ages to find a decent sized cage. i think he needs a few more perches. the one on the table is usually in at the bottom but we take it out when hes out incase he flies away, so we can walk him back to the cage. he did have a mirror in but i took it out cus he was agressive with it. the other toys are just cheap cat toys with bells in tied up with string. its hard to find decent toys in pet shops around here. gunna start looking at northern parrot for some me thinks

Billy has stolen my necklaces to play with and also my sons toys he has a plastic ball with spinning picture inside and a plastic phone that he loves because it has a mirror lol and i am always searching ebay.
My older rat satan is really protective over me (used to hump my hand :shock:

) but he will share me with ratticus lol but if he gets too much of my attention he jumps on him and takes my attention away lol

hahahaaaa humpin your hand. thats the funniest thing. i dont think harvey believes he is a rat so he doesnt act like one.

im getting my next student loan next month, and we are moving house, so i think ill check all the shops for kids toys too to help spit with moving house and to give him something to do while we are busy for those few days. im just worried things will break too easily and itl be dangerous

yeah you have to make sure they are safe billy loves to roll the ball around there is no way he can eat it or open it and the Phone seems indestructable billy has slammed it around in his cage thrown it over the edge lol not even a scratch :lol:

ahaha slammed it round his cage. birds are so destructive and carefree about anything arent they. its amusing. Spit tries to climb from the bottom of his cage to the top with his perches in his mouth (they are pretty long) etc after hes pulled them off the side of the cage. he makes such a racket and ALWAYS drops them back down again.

i always test the toys i buy first, especially if they are cheap like the cat toys i bought from the pound shop. i threw them about and jumped on them to see how much it would take to break. they are pretty good

they are the first toys he actually bothered with aswell.

dont think ill be moving house for a lot longer than i planned, so the animals shall be getting treat with lots of new toys when i get my loan

. Do you suggest any toys? he seems to like ones with bells in that he can see cus he tries to get the bells from inside.

Do you search ebay? they have loads of toys for birds and the good thing about baby toys is that they have to be safe enough for a baby so alot of them ive found to be fine.
