got my ringneck from a petstore 2 months ago. don't know her ? age but she started to grow her long tail feathers about 2 weeks after i got her. they told me they thought it was a female. she is active but will run away from me unless she is on the floor. then she will respond to "step up" by easily getting on my hand. she will not stay on my hand but runs up to my shoulder.
i am concerned about her vocals. she does not make much noise.
2 or 3 times a day she might make a squawk and once every day or 2,
usually early morning around sunup, she will make some funny chatter for about half a minute. other than that she is very quiet but fairly active.
does anyone have any advice for me?

Welcome to the board! It's a great place to be. The people here have helped me soooooooo much that I can't even begin to think where I might be without them and their help. I got my ringneck two weeks ago today and he's VERY QUIET also. I have to work all day during the week so I don't know if he's quiet when I'm not here. But in the evenings he barely makes a noise. Now on Sat. he seems to just scream and scream. Piercing screams at times. But I think that's cool and it doesn't bother me. We have a lot of Blue Jays in our neighborhood and when they're really going outside he gets going. I don't really know why they aren't noisy as I am a new owner as well. But maybe we're lucky! Anyway, best of luck with your new baby. At least she/he will let you hold it. Mine would rather rip an appendage off than let me hold him.
But I won't give up on him and I will be friends with him someday and I will hold him.

Noise...
Hey for the first few months my Prinny was sooo quiet. She would squawk everyonce once in a while and was silent. Lately however she has become more vocal. I guess it takes being used to the home they live in

. Kai certainly is use to the home now and its only been just over two weeks (but he is almost a year old).
I have recorded some of his vocals just today and will download them as soon as I can to my small and personal website, so you can hear what its like when they do start carrying on. The contact call is definately spectacular .. lol

Yeah. But Hane only gets going if the 'tiel begins screaming or the wild quakers come around.
I would nix the running up t the shoulder though. If he wants on your shoulder he has to wait until you put him there. When you enter the bluffing stage it'll pay off big time. That and step-up.

-Try talking to your bird alot even hens can learn to talk or even just chirp. Not often but sometimes
-Try some "white noise" like the stereo on quietly in the background.
I dont have a problem with them on my shoulders. I hate poop in my hair cos it's so long so I'd prefer them on my shoulder than my head and well my hands are always busy.
That said I have Kiva on my shoulder, Zek on my head, Bappy and Froggy chewing a pen on my other shoulder and Trill my cockatiel sitting on the back of my chair. I dont have enough hands :p
But if you want to keep them off your shoulder just keep moving them whenever they go up there. With my birds if they fly to my head I just move them to my shoulder. Do this enough times and they get the idea and fly straight to my shoulder.
Try to keep your arm in a V shape so they would have to go down to get up to your shoulder this may discourage them, Also if you keep your hand slightly elevated they may be less inclined to move. The V shape helps your arm to be supported if you lean your elbow on something. This way your hand is higher than your shoulder. Height=safety
