My baby has a problem with hands

Post by Kaleidoscope »

Hello there! I have my IRN Alexander for exactly one month today. I can`t say that he was scared at all of me and my family, but he has a real problem with hands. I clipped his wings after I realized that it is impossible to catch him if he was out of the cage. Immediately after the fun began. He is getting out of the cage every day, I`m always the one that "releases" him. So he goes around the room, specially where is the mirror. Seeing that he has a problem with hands getting close to him, I used a trick. I catch him in the evening with a very thin blanket. He is not afraid at all. So, I "build" a tent over me and I place him there, on me, and I talk to him gently. A few days ago he began to kiss me, and last evening he even stick himself to my face and lips, and stayed like that more that 15 minutes while I was talking and kissing him. Under the blanket I can touch him, he is not biting me, but he is not so happy about it. When he is out of the "tent", he is not staying to touch him. Anyway, I see an improvement since I use this blanket trick. And one more thing, when I leave the room, he is calling me, and sometimes he is trying to say a few words. I would really appreciate if you would advise me how to handle this problem with hands. Do you know any tricks which would help to make him comfortable with hands? Is it too soon? Thank you! :D

You are already doing a fantastic job. What works for one bird may not work for another so you have to be creative and find what he will enjoy. I have no doubt you can get him to like hands soon.

Keep up the good work!!

Sounds like you're making fine progress. Just keep it up and be patient. :)

He's doing a contact call when you leave the room, "Where are you? Are you okay?" You can respond to this with a quiet response, which will also train him that he can call for you in a softer voice, but don't rush into the room unless you want him learning that screaming is a good way to get attention. Just your vocal response should soothe him.

Hane and I 'contact call' as I go down the stairs, lol. I also say, "Bye Hane" each time I leave the room. :D

I've been called 'birdbrained' before, but somehow I don't think this is what they meant. say:hah-nay
