First moult??

Post by Miss_kaos »

i'm hoping someone can tell me round about when an irn's first moult can be expected.??? I bought my little grey/ green irn at 8 weeks. he/she is now nearly 5 mnths old exactly. He... or she went through a stage where he was looking a little scruff or scragly but that only lasted like 2 days now he's back to a healthy glow and shiny feathers. i can also see a faint line where the ring comes in around it's neck. I've searched around different places but no one has told me the information i want to know. It is now winter where i am so my best guess would be next spring or something??

Many thanks

I've been told a young IRN will moult randomly, but once older they will moult right after breeding season, then maybe a couple of small moults in between until the next hard moult (which is once a year).

Hello Pounamu,

You can expect the first molt around 7 months. Your ringneck will look patchy and will have straw feathers growing out everywhere.

Hi Miss Kaos. Welcome!

My Yoda went through a small moult around 7 months and looked a bit scruffy. Mature IRNs go through a hard moult once a year after breeding season (moulting time depends on where you live I believe?).
Females and young IRNs even have a faint/ light ring too.

Love to see pics!
