two questions

Post by Darlene »

My IRN Luna is 23 monthes old.1) If he is a male, would the ring definatly be presant by now? Luna is blue, and has a grey or charcoal ring with a thin line of white under it. 2) If Luna is female, will she lay eggs even if she is not with a male? I just need to know what the norm is and what to expect at two years old. I will welcome any advice on these two questions.

No, they can be upwards of 3.5 and still shock everyone with a ring, however, you should be seeing some definite signs by now:

Black under beak

Male dancing

Would it help you to see Baby in an awful moult when he began his ring, though it didnt come in that moult? Just the black line and a few red flecks.

For the female, yes she will have eggs without a male. We all have to check our females for bound eggs and such.

Oh I hate waiting. Its too exciting. Maybe after the next moult you might find out.
I dont have a female (that I know of yet) But I know they do lay eggs without a male present.

:) OK, thanks for your help on this subject. Luna will probably have a spring molt starting from march to april sometime. I'm hopeing I will be able to establish either male or female after this next molt. I should have had a DNA done earlier, but it is close enouph now, that I will know something for sure in the next six monthes. Question: How do you check for egg binding? And if Luna is female, at what age do they usually start laying eggs, and is it just once a year? ... Sorry for all the questions, I am trying to learn all I can.
Luna has a teddy bear that he dances in front of, and if he sees his self in a mirror. But he also puts his head back and sticks out his little chest for affection like I have heard that the females will do.
anouther question: Luna likes to shred boxes. So we give him/her a clean cardboard box and cut a door in it. He goes into it and chews the bottom out and scratches the pieces out. Does this mean a nesting instinct, or just haveing fun chewing & playing?
