What time is bed time?

Post by carrie »

I was just curious about what time you all put your birds to bed and what time they get up. How many hours sleep do they have every night? My little girl is having a terrible time sleeping in our new house because of the traffic noise and I want to get her back into her routine of going to bed at 8.30pm and getting up at 6.30am, although I'm not sure if this is normal anyway. Is there a normal time at all?

Every bird is different. Datsun choses her own bed time, it can be anytime between 5pm and 10pm depending on who is home, what we are doing and how tired she is.

We know that when she retreats to her sleeping perch at the back of her cage and starts chatting away not making any sense what-so-ever that shes ready for bed. If shes out shes like any kid she will desperately try to postpone bedtime!

Generally she gets either grumpy or noisy or both and most nights its at around 7pm, shes always awake by 7am no matter how late she got covered up the night before. I have heard they should get 10-12 hours sleep every night but I know that if Dats is tired, in her bed and covered it does not mean shes sleeping, most nights she sits in the dark and talks. All we can hear is: "hello...HELLoooo...helllllOOOOOOO...bowbowwowrau...(clicking...whistles)...hello... and this goes on for at least an hour very quietly. However even though shes not asleep don't try to talk to her! She gets very annoyed if you do and it almost always results in us getting yelled at!

Good topic!

Archimedes, my male Indian Rigneck, has different bed times. I’ll admit I am not into a routine with my parrots; however, I should be! They usually go to bed when I do. I usually keep my lights on until 3 a.m. and let my parrots do what they want. My African grey sleeps early. I respect him and just let him go to sleep. My ringneck on the other hand is a little nosy monster. He is always looking to see what I am doing or climbing on something.

I can tell you though that I know when he wants to go to sleep because he’ll start to bite when I get near his cage. They are not hard bites, but just warning. It’s like he is telling me, “Let me go to bed or you’re going to get it!” His bed times vary form 9 pm – 3 am. It all depends.

Although most people put their parrots down around 8-9:30 I do not. So let your ringneck set the pace. He/she will let you know when she is ready for bed—believe me.

Also, don’t follow my path—ringnecks should be put to bed early because it’s unnatural for them to be up late. I just feel bad for my little monster when he is doing whatever he can to get out and on me..i guess you could say I am a SUCKER for him!

Best wishes,

Both of my girls go night-night when I do. I put them in their cages and say "night-night girls". They go in and wonder around a bit then out for the night.

If I'm not in the room, they don't care anything about being awake. I love being so loved!

Chook puts himself on top of the curtain rail when he wants a nap. He'll just walk away from everything and everyone and disappear. If it is a serious night time snooze, he'll go to his cage and puff himself up on his back perch and grind his beak a bit, then sleep. Occasionally he'll get up if he thinks your eating something pretty good but generally, he is nippy if you don't let him do his own sleeping thing.

Thank you all for your input. It seems that what she's doing now - that is putting herself to bed at around 7.00 -7.30 - is quite okay. She used to hate going to bed before me but for the last few nights she toddles off to her cage and puts herself to bed. Last night I left her uncovered in case she just wanted a little snooze but she told me off so I covered her up and she was out like a light. Unfortunately she is awake at 6am - so I don't get a sleep in on the weekends anymore!

It is a good thing these babies are so special because not only are they a 30 year committment, they are also like having a two year old that never grows up.

Our lives tend to revolve around them. It must however, or we'll have some pretty sad birds on our hands.

Sorry about your sleep but it is adorable you have the cage set up so she can come and go as she pleases. I too have my cages like that. Free birds are happy birds but safety is the most important aspect. Therefore, it is important that any bird has a way to retreat to their home, with no assistance. Be it with a rope toy or whatever works for the individual. I dont know how old your baby is but I have a 5 month old and a 2 yr old. They don't bother waking up until I do. Good thing for me as I have four human kids, as well.

Hane goes to sleep before me usually, but sometimes I can't sleep and he sleeps while I play on the comp or read. Though he'll be fussy if I've had a rough night. Normally I go to bed around midnight and Hane goes to sleep when it gets dark, as my room doesn't have lights on when I'm not there +++ (that was Hane's contribution to this post).

i know some people don't like to cover their birds but if i want to have a sleep in on the weekends they have to be covered the night before or it will be the usual 7:00 wake up screech.(i dont need to set the alarm clock anymore) :?

there has been days(after big one) where i haven't heard a sound out of them untill 10:00am( when they are covered).i don't make a habit out of it but gee it's good on the odd occasion to have that bit of extra sleep!!

All the birds I've had indoors as pets put themselves to bed when they are tired. They know cage is for sleeping, so when they want to sleep they go into it.

As I'm busy working they are up early and play in the bird room and I sleep in and go to work, or let them out when I wake up.

At night If Jay and I are out they go to sleep at sundown when it gets dark, if we are home they go to bed around 10pm ish or whenever they get tired. I'm usually up later than that. They have some half light till I go to bed then I close the door.

I don't really have a problem with the wake up thing. Chook just comes into our room and climbs into bed and goes back to sleep. He loves it.
