naughty bird - help!!
Hi,
Max has become a very naughty little bird in the last week. Whereas up until a week ago he would quietly sit on my hand and clean and sleep, in the last week he has got a lot more adventurous and with it a lot naughtier.
He used to put up with being gently stroked down his back, now he hisses and lunges every time my hand goes near him. At the moment he is trying non-stop to get onto the pc monitor and as he knows he needs me to lift him there he is currently hopping from my left to right hand whilst I type this.
What he generally does when he wants me to take him somewhere is to lean way forward and tap me on the face (closed beak) but now he wants it all the time, he won't stay with me.
Can anyone help
By the way it is Spring here in NZ and Max is around 10 months old. I have had him for nearly 7 months.
An d I may call Max a he, but I haven't had him sexed so I have no idea.....

Give it a week and dont take it personally. They go through things like we do. Moody to say the least. The first time my girl turned on me it almost broke my heart but as fast as she turned she came back.
I dont know what, if anything I did to piss her off. It doesnt matter though because she is over it and soon yours will be too.
Just make sure your baby looks and acts Ok otherwise and I wouldnt worry for a week or so.
Is he lunging MORE than actually biting? He may be going through the bluffing stage. My girl dont play or bluff. SHE BITES and means it and dont feel a bit bad about it. She looks at you like "Well Mama, you know I dont like you touching me... when are you going to be trained". IIIeeee, they are a mess.
She look like she is playing to you?
Bad Mood:
Good Mood:
She decides each morning if she is going to be a good girl or a bad girl and sticks with that through the day. I love her with all my heart but I have no clue why. She is MEAN as all get-out with no apologies. Still my favorite friend to be around

Ta for that
Max is usually busy running around calling out in the morning along with the birds outside.
But doesn't like being touched - will hop on my hand ok and come to me if he (or she) is on the floor - it took until 9 last night til he calmed down. I keep trying to pat him even if he tries to get away. I don't let him get away with it.
Hope that is the right thing - don't get angry (although it is testing my patience) but keep talking really softly (doesn't seem to make a difference).
I am trying to now go for stroking his beak then moving up from there and it seems better than a hand coming over the top.

meant to say - your bird is looking a lot more relaxed in the bottom pic than the top one
And oddly enough Max doesn't bite, only ever did once when I first got him and never has again.
I took him to the vet to get his wings clipped and he was pretty relaxed, but took him to the vet shop once and he hated it. They insisted on putting on gloves and stuff and Max was terrified. So from now on I will either do it myself or get the vet to do it. It is worth the ten bucks.

I too was gettting a bit stroppy recently but lo and behold, the little sod has calmed down quite substantially this evening. Was a bit stroppy when I picked him up after work, but after I spent a while on the telephone he was keen to come and see me and was not too worried when being patted. I put my hand up to his beak and rub that first then all around that until he is quite calm then up over his forehead.
Max seems to cope with that.
Will see what he is like tomorrow
At least he didn't hiss at me tonight
And he had a good hour and a half dozing on my finger
My fingers are crossed
By the way, how the hell do we post a photo on this group?

I dont know if it is me or my bird but she has never hissed or even pinned her eyes. But, she is MEAN. She wants to be sweet but something just tells her its best not to. Only way I have her so hand trained is to literally offer my hand and ask her to take a bite. Then she looks at me like I am stupid and does the command. She acts like it makes her mad when I do this

Ah,
different to Max.
He always comes to me, it's just he hates being patted and does everything in his power to get away.
So I take him away from his cage.
I read indian ringneck's comments on another post on training - very long and extremely helpful - and am persevering with that. But for a change he sat on my hand for most of last night and slept off and on, however this morning he was up to his usual tricks.
How old is yours?
I am thinking after seeing comments by site admin that she reckons she can pick the sex before the ring appears that Max is a boy. He usually sits there a big fluffed up ball of feathers, hardly ever are his feather all tight unless he is running around his cage calling to other birds.

naughty bird
Sounds like your bird is going through its juvenille stage, start of it anyway. This will last for a little while.
Just wondering why you clip the wings, is it really necessary? We don't have our bird clipped and he is in his cage most of the day and comes out to fly in the evening. I can't help but wonder if this makes him a happier bird.
Tolerate this stage your baby is going through with love and patience it does get better.

I clipped my babies wings at 8 weeks old after she took off like a bald eagle and ate the sliding glass door. How it didnt kill her, I will never know. I have really high ceilings and HUGE windows. You clip their wings for their safety and well-being.
Skibum:
My girl is about 4.5 months old. She, just this week, started saying 'Hey' on command but you can barely hear it. She will only do it when I am around so everyone else things Im fibbing
Like an old car, they only make that noise when noone else is around to hear it!

catch them when they are talking
Good luck with recording your bird talking.
We have tried on many occasions and some how he knows what video cameras, camera and tape decks are!! Then he shuts up and just stares.
About the wing clipping - we partly close the curtains on exposed windows when our baby is flying. Also we have net curtains on other windows so Herbie has never flown into a window.
