Problem with Step Up

Post by Lauren »

Hey chickies, I've had my baby Yoda for almost a week now and he/she seems fine walking around the house checking things out. But when I go to pick Yoda up, I say 'Up Up Up Yoda' and he/she will put one foot on my finger and hang onto anything else close by with its life! Even the carpet! I know its still early days and Yoda is probebly still settling in. Should I try and 'unhook' Yoda or just leave it and try again later? Yoda has not biten yet (not even tried!). Which I think is fantastic! Will let me give he/she a head rub and seems to love it but still wont step up will only let me have a foot!
Gilbert seems to just want Yoda's food and isnt really interested in the new arrival! When would be a good time for them both to 'play' together?
Thanx
Lauren, Gilbert and Baby Yoda

when he puts his foot on your finger, do you lift your hand up? This may encourage him to step the rest of the way up. If you already do this.....I don't know....more time?

Psittacula I know exactly what you mean, Pepper does it to me, even when I resuce her off the ground. Can't say what I reccomend though, cause I am probably doing the wrong thing with making Pepper step up even when she doesn't want to....

I can tell this is going to be frustrating. I need something Yoda wants but I havnt figured out yet what Yoda really wants.
Gilberts bell has become a 'step up' help. He will only step up if I'm holding his bell. So first thing in the morning I unhook his bell and he automatically steps onto my arm. He goes where his bell goes! hehe Gilbert steps onto my arm but will bite my fingers if I hold them out.

A bird should be stepped up in one swoop motion. Its how they prefer it.

Walk up to the bird and put your fingers at the 'step up point' (we all know where that is) and swoop the baby up.

Until he was better though, I would do this when his toes couldnt get caught in anything. However, if the proper technique is used, the bird wont have time to latch.

He'll be on your finger looking around like 'damn'.

Trust me.

Remember: swoop motion below brest, right above feet. They get a clue fast.

Thanx Mik, it works! Ive had to do this SEVERAL times today as baby Yoda has 'stole' Gilberts cage! Poor Gilbert can even have 2 minutes peace without Yoda chasing after him. Poor Gilbert!

*giggles*

Just don't try the sweep motion with a macaw ;)

It works wonders with the small birds though...
