I don't want to admit this to yall, but since i just admitted i'm an IRNaholic, i need a question answered. Now as you guys know i love Lou w/all my heart, but he WILL NOT EAT pellet food. He hates it. I've tried so many times and he'll eat it for a while, and then he'd rather starve. He is extremely good about eating fresh fruits and veggies. What i think may be the problem is that he was raised on seed. I got him at a little over a yr old. I've tried every kind, and to me, pellet food's a waste of money because he wont eat it. Thanks guys for any suggestions, i feel like a bad mama to my fid.

This should NOT be a problem as long as he is eating a WIDE variety of fresh food and not a TON of seed :wink:

Girl, that bird looks that good on seed! :shock:

All I can say is you must do one hell of a job feeding him because a poor diet shows. Shows fast and awful, and lou is honestly THE most attractive male I have seen yet. No offense anyone, I too have a male.

I wouldnt worry about it too much, he sure aint hawgry.

With Baby's conversion, I too had to do the 'eat it or starve'. He ate it. Prinny converted the same way. They dont want to let those seeds go man!

Have you trie grinding the pellets into a powder and dusting the veggies with it. Maybe this will get him to like the taste. I agree though, he looks great!

Yep Yep...Prin had two choices...eat the danged pellets or starve...and Prin pisn't one for starving so eventually she came to terms with eating them

Gwennie - he does look great so I definitely wouldn't worry too much if he did not eat pellets. As long as you still give him a varied diet with fruits and veggies he should be ok. I think that IRNs tend to eat some seeds in the wild anyway since they are known for destroying crops in the wild.

I have tried my guys on pretty much pellet only diet and they just didn't do as well. They got very light feeling even though they did not really lose any weight. My guys are on a seed blend (Higgins Mayan Harvest Yucatan and Celestial), pellets and lots of cooked or fresh food. Some eat the pellets better than others. I am hoping that I can get better weight on everybody by doing this. They are already feeling a lot better weight wise.

It does take a little more time to do this though - unless I precook during the weekend. :wink:

I used the approach that I think Imran or Jeremy recommended and I give my birds seed in one of their cups 3 times a week and they go crazy for it. But on the other days they eat the pellets, but not the ones I want them to. I also feed fresh veggies/grains/and fruit every day.
I bought Harrison's from the vet who suggested the fine pellets and when they didn't go for that I figured it was the pellet was too small to interest them. So I just bought a large bag of the Coarse size pellets and watched Priya take them one by one carry them to the end of the play gym and drop them off the side. They were about $30.00 US for the bag.
Needless to say I feel like a fool. Nila came with Zupreem fruit flavored , colored pellets, and they both eat those, and they will pick at the Roudybush pellets, and a little at the fine Harrisons. They love nutriberrys but they like to throw them too. Anything with more weight goes farther and makes a bigger sound, hence the interest in throwing them. :lol:

But I think they should have some seed too. They would get it in the wild.
