Hi my name is Jamie and I bought a IRN 3 days ago, she is amazing, very sweet. I spent alot of time in the pet shop making sure that she liked me also. I was told she was hatched this past spring but her leg band says 2000? Anyways, she coos when you pet her head, is that normal? I would like to learn more to train her as I am new to the bird family.
Thanks,
Jamie

Hello Jamie and welcome to this forum!
Jamie first let me start out on congratulating you on your new Ringneck. They make spectacular pets and will bring you many hours of enjoyment.
About the leg band, your Ringneck might very well have been hatched this past spring; however, the breeder just used an older band. Or, as much as I hate to say it, she might have been pawned off to you as a young parrot. Anyhow, at least she has a new house with someone who seems to enjoy here. I would do some history research into her past. If she has a band you can bet her breeder kept records of her. You’ll get much more information than you might think, things like birth date, the parents, etc…
Also you wanted to know about the cooing while you pet your female. Yes, it’s very normal and she is letting you know that she enjoys it very much. What’s very interesting about this behavior is that it is more prominent in females and not so much seen in male Ringnecks. Male Ringnecks make a high pitches raptor sound if they enjoy a situation. Watch the eyes of your female as well, they are very expressive.
Hope this helps and best wishes,
I.C.
