So I have to board Baby...
We have decided to board Baby at The Aviary when we leave for Indiana/Chicago on August 19th through the 28th. I am not happy about leaving him for 10 days at all but we decided it will be the best option since where we're staying is home to a rambunctious husky. Also we will be out and about most of the time.
I have MAJOR anxiety over leaving Baby in a cage at the boarder for so long (so much that I am now not looking forward to my vacation). I'm VERY worried about him turning mean because he will not see us for so long. The option of someone caring and handling him at out apartment does not exsist.
We have the option of taking his cage in to the boarder or using theirs and I think I just want to use theirs so he doesn't associate his cage with a bad experience (I am assuming this will be a bad experience for him?)
Has anyone ever boarded before? *sigh*

Actually when I was at my second job at Petco I was at the register and this lady was buying a TON of parrot toys. I asked her what kind of parrots she had and she went into talking about how she had to board her 2 parrots for 3 weeks at the same place I'm boarding Baby. She said they're really good there but she just felt guilty leaving them for so long *as will I...hell I ALREADY do!*
I reeeeally want to bring Baby on the plane up North with us but we will be staying at my mum's condo with my crazy hyper husky (bird stress!). One day we will be spending the whole day in a city 2 hours from mum's place at the Indy Zoo and downtown. Then we will be spending 3 days in Chicago (not staying over night). Then I will be showing my boyfriend around my home town. Midway through the visit, my brother and sister-in-law are coming with their 2 lab/shepherd mix puppies. I would worry about him getting freaked out by all the activity and maybe getting attacked (or worse) by one of the dogs.
Does this sound like more stress than boarding Baby? I am starting to reconsider this and maybe actually take him. Let me know your opinions please.
Well you shouldnt worry about baby being mean, he will be maybe a lil moody but that is all, I left for costa rica for 10 days in the beginning of june. I had my sister, who hates birds come by daily to provide food and water. That is all she did, she did not even let him out of the cage. When I got home i opened the cage door, shared a bowl of cereal, asnd we were best friends again. I personally dont trust boarding parrots there are too many diseases around, and people you have never met before taking care of your pride and joy. I agree with Dani im sure you can work something out with where you are going. I mean you could even put the bird in the bathroom while you are gone and shut the door. Where there is a will there is a way!!!
we took indie to aarons mums place, she lives 11 hours away and has a dog that indie kept on talking to but he was always high up so the dog couldnt actually get to him. When we wanted to let him out we just went into our room and shut the door.Does your mum have a high cupboard or something to put the cage on so the dogs have no chance of getting to him???the only thing we had to do was get a going away cage for him because his was too big to take with us...Im pretty sure there was a discussion on here about taking birds on planes, might help to check that out.

I am an hr or two away but I live in a decent house. Im a great mother to my fids and I even treat my real kids ok, usually.
I dont want your Baby boarded. Everyone here has seen my house, me, my family... you name it. Im an open book.
I extend my heart and home to Baby and will care for her very well. It makes *me* want to cry thinking about it. They wont give her outside time.
Gas to Tampa would be cheaper plus you have an insurance policy that your Baby is getting the same love my Baby gets.
The offer is on the table. All I need is the bird. No cage, no food, plenty of it all right here.
Dont board that Baby.

Once again you all are lovely with your advice! I don't know what Baby and I would do with out you all *hugs & love*
Mik, you're offer is so generous and I thank you from the bottom of my heart! For now, I don't want to put you in the position of caring for a possibly ill bird (especially since you have 2 of your own!)
I am going to call the vet today and explain the situation and the timing and how he's on meds for 23 more days but I leave in 15 and that I was going to take him with me. He may want me to board him at the vet's office so they can medicate and test and so Baby doesn't get more stressed.
See this? This is my life. I just can't handle it at times!

I just called Spirit Air and booked Baby a reservation to come in the cabin with us to and from Indiana
The vet said taking him with us shouldn't be a problem at all. We'll just have to buy ANOTHER cage when we get up there to keep at Baby's grandma's! So much for that shopping spree in Chicago
I wonder what size I can get away with keeping Baby comfortably in for a lil over week.
So starts the adventures of baby going EVERYWHERE

teehee I hope he likes to "fly" as well! I'm a bit nervous about him possibly sqwaking on the plane and annoying people so I'm going to bag up some fresh apple, pepper, and mango. From the sounds of the lady who took Baby's reservation I don't think I'll be able to actually take him out of the carrier...which is my next adventure....finding an F.A.A. aprooved carry-on for Baby.....*wonders about a cat carrier and how to put a perch in...* Off to Google I go!
