DNA

Post by Mikaela »

Anyone know of a good place to have this done?

A link would be great!

If you have had it done, care to share about it? Where, how it worked, ect.

He is starting to moult pretty bad, feathers everywhere so I probably should just wait.

Mik,

I had Tiki's DNA done through www.avianbiotech.com It was pretty cheap too. You request a test kit through them for free and then you send it back with your payment and your results are ready online in a few days and you will also receive a certificate stating the results as well. They have two test for DNA. 1) blood test, where you have to clip their nail a little too short to get a sample (me I couldn't do this to my baby) or 2) pluck about 5 or 6 chest feathers. I plucked the feathers from Tiki's back. He wasn't too happy with me, but he got over it, of course he was only about 4 months old. Everyone here on this board and my breeder said Tiki looked like a female, however the results came back male, so I still felt very unsure and Avian Biotech told me I could have him retested for free, however I didn't want to pluck anymore feathers. Well they were right, Tiki is a boy, because now his ring is coming in, he has several little black feathers just next to the beak area of his neck.

If you do the plucking method, you should probably wait until molting is complete, because they can not get DNA off of molted feathers and if you pluck one that was ready to fall out, then there may not be enough DNA on it.

Hope this helps! :) Lisa

Well, I hate the idea of plucking and I have alot of feathers now. I was *hoping* I could use those feathers and not have to hurt him.

Thanks so much lisa. Wish I could just use those that fell out. I know nothing about DNA testing but plan to before the day is over, lord willing.

The idea of pulling my babies feathers out bothers me but Im tired of being 99.8% positive.

Mik,
You will need to wait until you receive the test kit before you pluck any feathers. Your kit should come pretty quickly, because Avian Biotech is located in Florida.

When you do pluck the feathers, it will probably be easier to get them from the back instead of the chest. Just grab the feather close to the shaft and give a quick little tug and it should just pop right out. Be warned though your baby is going to let out a squawk and let you know that it was not the most pleasant feeling in the world. And you do need about 5 or 6 feathers.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Im just going to pretend im doing her/his eye brows, we live through that.

You have been SO helpful. This 99.8% sure thing is starting to get to me. Next week I'll be back to not caring.

Its almost like being pregnant... the excitement of waiting to know the sex. I would wait til I gave birth as I did with Matthew but you still 'know'. I did anyway. Never ever considered he could be a girl while I was pregnant.
