How safe is Air travel for my ringneck

Post by birdlover »

Hi everyone, I'm missing my pet ringneck eversince I left home and I was wondering on getting him here. Air travel seems the best and only viable option, but I was woried that whether or not air travel in cargo would pose of any danger to a ringneck. I mean I get my ears popping whenever I'm on a flight and I was worried that air travel may pose a bit of a hazard for my ringneck. :( I would die if anything happened to him. Hes pretty healthy and very active and I would like to know how safe is air travel for my ringneck?

P.S are there any airlines that allow pets in cages to acocmpany passengers on flights :D

I know of many that have flown with their IRN's and all was well EXCEPT the bird was scared. Heck, even all of us are a little iffy about flying lol. I wouldn't put my baby through that unless it was best for the both of you. Should you decide it is, I would go for it if Baby is otherwise healthy.

In fact, many people buy IRN's from breeders from afar and have them flown to them so it isn't all that uncommon. I bet your baby wants you just as bad. My baby would die of loneliness.

I had to come back to this post this morning. You know they sell carriers now that LOOK exactly like purses. Think e-bay! I fly alot. Sooooo many people have those purses and you cant see inside of them. He will go right through the x-ray machine though as your purse would so CHECK WITH VET FOR OK ON THAT. I see lil ol ladies with hidden dogs, cats, birds, lizards, you name it. I even seen a guy with a baby strapped to his chest and a big over coat on slide right through. Don't babies fly for free? Guess not. I just smile with this "I know what you did last summer' grin and they smile back like "shhhh, it is my baby."

So I asked a lady what if they catch you? She said well then my baby will have to ride in cargo. So, either way he will be allowed on board. Let me know if I can help reunite you and your baby.

Some flights allow carriers small enough to be placed under your seat as a carry-on but as far as I know they don't sell seats just for a pet anymore. Since ringnecks are small, some of those ferret carriers could work.

If no one can fly with you pet, make sure that the airline you are using has a pressure and temp controlled cargo bay for animals. You need to have an airline approved carrier for that. Across the US it's about 100-150 dollars to ship a bird. Depends on the airline though. Call them.

Keep the bird hydrated during flight, you can put water-filled fruits and veggies in to help with that, in addition to a fixed dish or water bottle and normal food.

If you're flying the bird out of country check the quarantine laws. Some countries have recently changed them, such as Japan which now only has a 12 hour quarantine as long as the bird looks healthy. As far as I know there are no vaccines required for birds going to different countries. Coming back into the US, however I'm not sure.

And it would be a good idea to get a vet check on your ringneck before flight anyway, no matter where he's going. ^_^

I would be TERRIFIED to put my baby in cargo, no way. Those people throw that stuff around like garbage. It is an option though but one I dont feel very good about. Sorry, I am one to share my opinion, hope not to offend.

lol, how do you think the breeders fly them to you? ^_^

They don't treat the animals so badly, not like luggage. They're liable for animals unlike our bags. So they have a pretty strict policy about that sort of thing.

Yeah the thought of having some underpaid baggage handler toss my baby in the luggage compartmentof an airplane keeps me in shivers. I don't think that they'd be so hard on animals but then again its pretty scary for a bird to be all alone in a dark luggage compartment for the entire length of a journey.

My IRN starts hollering for attention the very minute she notices no ones around. Birds need attention and love just like all living creatures. I am though considering the idea of finding an airline that'll allow my baby to accompany a passenger. Atleast she'll get all the attention she needs.

Busey came to me via delta dash. It is a service that ships mostly pets and corpses. :P
The people who were handling the animals (there was also a cocker spaniel and a venomous lizard on the flight!) seemed to be very careful and caring with handling the animals. I guess that's because they're trained to be careful since it's a lot of their business.

Busey was scared crazy when he got off the plane, but by the time we got home he was coming to the door of the carrier to check things out and eating the food that was in the carrier with him.

I guess it would be scary, but when he/she saw YOU it might make it all better! :)
