Kids and birds

Post by berrynice »

Just wondering what others thoughts are of kids and birds. My boys all handle Bhanu from the 4 yo to the 10yo. They put up with the nips and are all really gentle. I've had birds since I got my first budgie at 5 and my parents encouraged me with my interest. My oldest has now developed the same love that I have. What do you think?

Kids and birds *thumbs up* My kids are all over our fids, they love em and play with them non stop. Our fids go from one to the other, then back to us, they take them off into their room to climb on and play with them while they do their homework etc. Wouldn't have it any other way.

To be honest I believe it is solely dependant on the individual child and bird, some birds are too unpredictable to be trusted with a child who may not be confident enough to be boss with a bird. Most birds need set boundaries and definate rules. They need a strong dominant handler who is not afraid of them or of being forceful. I know many adults who fail at this let alone kids.

I am not saying I dont think we should let our kids play with our birds but I do think it needs to be supervised and coached. Birds have bad days and one bad day with a child may ruin their love for birds or cause ditrust on both sides. Some kids have it, others dont and itsour job to work that out for the safety of both parties.
