Newbie to IRN Need help with behavior

Hi Everyone,

I have had my IRN for about 4 days. She is about a year old and was rehomed from another person because they said her 4 year old didn't get along with her. When we first got her she loved both myself and my mother (who lives with me). But on day 3 she would have nothing to do with my mother. She will sit on her finger but will not let her touch her (sometimes nips) and often flaps her wings to get away.

With me on the other hand, she screams for me to pick her up and postures for me to pet her. I love her and she is super sweet with me but I want her to allow my mother to touch her too. She was hand fed and hand raised by the breeder in her own home. The breeder told me I should "back off" and only have my mother play and give her attention until she "unchooses" me. Is this good advice? Are IRNs one person birds? Or did I just get a temperamental one? What should I do to correct this behavior? Thank you for your help in advance.

Hi,

Giving your mother the role of being the fun person who gives the best treats is a good idea. My bfs bird, Nila, likes my boyfriend best but I do most of his training and feeding so Nila really likes me too. I have found trick training really good for building a good, positive bond. Ringnecks are smart birds.

Thank you for the reply! What kinds of treats do you use? Anything that IRNs like a lot?

Depends on the bird, sunflower seeds are usually a winner. Both of my guys like oat groats, sprouts and tiny pieces of fruit too.

Watermelon!!! Mine would do flips for watermelon In moderation, of course.

watermelon is so wonderfully good for people and birds.. i might introduce my birds to that soon..

but to stay on topic, no Indian Ringnecks are Not one person birds.. they can make friends with everyone if conditions are right... at least that's my experience.

It's good to socialize them and expose them to different mannerisms that people can have.
