Transporting IRN's

is it OK to take them around with you in the car, is there anything special i will have to do eg. cover the cage, how tolerant are they to temp change?

They love being anywhere you are, assuming you have bonded.

Chamon and I are the weirdos in this one so I'll jump in while she is sleeping. She and I take our babies everwhere:

To dinner, to work, to run errands, family and friends... you name it, she goes with me. All she has to do is ask. For some reason when she wants to go she says "where's Poppy?" I believe that is her code for 'lets go' because I say that to her when we go to meet him somewhere. In the car I ask "wheres Poppy Baby? Wanna go see Poppy? (We are an Itailian family, thus the Poppy) But the kids call him dad usually and Poppy is more of a pet name for Daddy. That mean chick is short for Mama.

Please bare in mind, I live in Florida, 85 days 70 nights so cold isnt a problem. Chamon in now in her summer. Cold is a huge problem. They are very uncomfortable when cold and will not have a good time.

Otherwise, take that baby out! Show the world how wonderful they are! If you get any crap just put your hands out, close your eyes and say 'Baby guide Mama, right or left... you know Im blind hehe. They back off FAST. lol Yep, I've done it. :oops:

Since you are taking it about I assume the wings are clipped nice and short so that all you get is a flutter to the groud? If more, clip first. As far as a cage... why would you want to do that? The point is to get them out and about. All your bird needs is something in the car to perch on. Heck, a broom for that matter. But a cage would be to defeat the purpose.

In a carry cage on the seat would be the most common option. But if it's a close pet you might get away with it being on your shoulder.

I have one of those tiny dog carriers that I placed a perch in. Prinny loves the thing and she adores car rides. Depends on the bird and how often you take them!

I use a little play gym like thing and sit it in the car seat and she perches and checks out other cars. People trip when they look over and see a parrot staring at them, they dont thing its real.

I have a carrier but I dont use it. I dont see the point. They perch where you put them when in a situation they arent so sure about.

If you do use a carrier, pleeeease put a towel inside for grip. I see people with birds sliding all up and down the carrier, messing their tails up... what are people thinking? Or lack thereof.

Ok now I am a fruitcake and I insist on taking Datsun everywhere possible. We go to family dinners, to my friends houses, work, to the park, cafes....

In the car I am torn, Datsun hates being in her car cage but if we are travelling alone I do make her. My fear is if we were to have an accident and she lost her grip she could slam into the walls or windscreen of the car. :cry:

But because she is so well behaved and hates being caged in the car, if James comes with us she gets to sit with me or on my headrest while he drives. I still take the cage along so she has somewhere to go for food and if she gets sleepy.

Datsun LOVES the car and if that means she has to put up with a cage she does but she far prefers free roaming. I am just a paranoid mum who has seen the outcome of too many pets in car accidents not adiquately restrained :cry:

Anyhoo... here is the carrier I use to take Datsun in the car, I buckle it in so she is fully secure and she has food, water, perch and toys in there.
