Remmi's going thru BIG TIME MOULT

Post by jen5239 »

Got home to find my little Remmi looking like a little rag-a-muffin! I have never seen a bird moult like this before. His ENTIRE body is moulting. He's dropping feathers daily. Down to only one tail feather. And the feathers he's dropping range from tiny, tiny to tail size feathers. When you pet him alls you feel are those pin feathers. Poor thing must be miserable. Last night he just sat in my lap for the longest time letting me rub his poor little head. He was closing his eyes and seemed to really be enjoying it. I'm sure those things probably itch. He's not been real moody, but can be at times. And it looks like a lot of that black barring is going away. His coloring seems to be getting lighter. I'll keep you posted. Should I be doing anything special for him?? Feeding him anything extra. He seems to be ok.

Thanks,
Jen

Yuki is going through the same thing, she looks so tragic lol, the other two Kiva and Growls have finished their molt. So all my babies will look pristine soon. You'll be awestruck when they become adults, such a beautful looooong tail and the colours change. They look so elegant. Kiva I think would be coming up to his two year molt. So he's an adult now. Growls is around the 6 month molt.

Lots of baths. Lots of warm water. Help soften up those pins so they can open easier. It also helps with the itchy skin.

Tiki is going through a moult as well. We came home the other night to find that the last few of his tail feathers have fallen out. So now he just has a few stubbly tail feathers. I keep calling him my little ducky butt, because that is exactly what his little butt looks like - a ducks!

Ringo has just been through a moult, he had his wings clipped the middle of January what is the chances that his flight feathers have grown back... every time he stretches his wings out i cannot get a good look and i am still unable to hold him?

You shouldnt re clip until all the feathers have finished growing cos you cant cut blood feathers anyway. If he's not flying it's probably not time to clip yet. You can usually hear it if your bird has half it's feathers missing and it's flying. It sounds labored.
