Is this cage big enough? and Are these Wings Clipped?

Post by Poochletty »

Hello

I was wondering if this cage is big enough for my Blue? In Inches, it measures: 15 deep x 20 wide x 26 tall

Also - I think his wings are not clipped. Is this correct? I want to clip them myself, but need proper instructions. I know it doesn't cost much to have a groomer or vet do it, but I rather not take him out during the winter. But I really want him clipped so he has no chance of escaping into such cold weather either.

Indeed the wings are not clipped, best to go to an avian vet or specialist pet shop. A lot of people on this forum don't have a lot of nice things to say about pet shops overseas, but here it seems a bit different (NZ).
Don't know where you are based somewhere cold by the sounds, so obviously NH.

If you prefer to try yourself then have a rummage around this forum for tips, some say best idea is to wrap it in a towel when you do it, it protects you as well as keeping the bird a bit calmer sometimes. Depends on your point of view. I am not a fan of gloves at all.

The flight feathers to go are the long, darker ones that overlap when your bird is at rest as in the pics. They basically need to be trimmed up so they no longer protrude below the light blue feathers that sit on top. Don't cut them too far otherwise you may cause a bleed and they don't have a lot of blood to lose!

Anyway - there is bound to be an expert here so don't do anything until someone who really can describe how to do it properly replies to your post!!!!

I would say unfortunately that the cage is too small. You want something large enough that your bird can run around and climb in it if shut in it all day. They aren't happy just being idle and get bored easily.

Probably half as big again at least - and maybe even double the size so you can fit lots of bars and things in to climb over.

Have a look at this post in this forum

If the link doesn't work then go to miscellaneous comments/questions and a post called help with cages. Also, have a look at some of the photo forum pics - that will give you an idea of cage size.

Cheers
Enjoy

Thank you for the help. I think we are going to by a much larger cage. I will shop around to see what is available. I live in Northern Idaho in the United States. And I think I'm also going to purchase a travel cage and throw a warm blanket over it while dashing to a heated car to take him to a professional for the wing clip. And I will dash quickly, as it is usually about -5 celsius here during the day right now. Thanks for the advice. Those cages are beatiful. I hope I can find something here like that at a good price.

i agree at all with skibum.
You can buy a cage via e-shoping
A great e-shop is http://www.birdsafestore.com
i bought from this an excellent travel cage, but the shipping cost is too expensive for greece, you are lucky about this.

What a cutie you have there. :D Yes, the cage is too small, but its okay for a short term thing until you get another. I would suggest getting an avian vet to clip his wings if your unsure of how to clip or havnt been shown before.

That is my cage. ^_^ It's been perfect for me, lol. Just the right size (any bigger and I wouldn't be able to reach him! I'm short  ) and free shipping. ^_^

I've had the cage for a few years now, both my sister and I got the same ones. :)
