Turkey the chewer

Post by adreane »

Hi All,

Just wanted to give you a little update on Turkey. She is really bluffing up a storm lately but we are able to work through it with her. It comes and goes and yesterday we think she woke up on the wrong side of the perch. She was lunging and growling....it was actually kinda funny. She got over it really fast once she realized it wasn't working. She has developed a bad habit of chewing on things. These are her latest things she has been chewing up.

Does anyone have any ideas that will keep her busy....she is always chewing on things and already has tons of toys in her cage but she needs something that will keep her interested. She does spend a lot of tome with me but when I am gone or I take a nap on the couch this is what happens......she goes in distructive mode.
Other then that she is doing great. She has learned all kinds of whistles and I think she is trying to make other sounds too. I wonder when she will start talking and if she will at all. She loves to whistle. Anyways does anyone have any ideas of things for het to chew?

We put all blinds and cords out of reach after they chewed through one of the blind cords. Is turkey flighted? Also, mine don't get much unsupervised time out of their cage mostly for their own safety, especially cos their wings are currently clipped. I've found they love chewing on pieces of wood from a bottlebrush tree. The outside bark comes off reasonably easy but the inside is really hard.

Good luck!

Her wings are clipped and I have since moved her cage away from the window a little so she couldn't get to the blinds. The crazy bird climbed almost all the way to the top of the blinds...lol. good thing blinds are only 3 dollars. I found she really likes to shread paper so I put a few sheets in her cage and she goes at it for hours....makes a big mess though. Where do you get bottlebrush wood?

I'm pretty sure I first discovered bottlebrush was really good for birds on this site. There was a link to an american guy's website selling gyms and toys that he made of it. I can't find that link but here's a different one http://www.goldencockatoo.com/paplgypaplst.html. Bottlebrush are Australian natives but I believe you can get them in other places too. I discovered I have one in my yard. You know a bottlebrush buy it's red flowers that look like the bristles on a bottle cleaner.
