whats the best way to introduce a new bird?

Post by BrendaDup »

Hi, I have only had Willow since July 19 ,she is doing great but I Have been offered to take a sun conure he/she is 6 years old ,the lady who owns him had a stroke and can no longer take care of him , what is the best way to bring him into my home without flipping Willow out ? I am just worried I will have 2 screaming birds ? any advice you all can give me would be great. Thanks so much Brenda

Sorry for the late reply Brenda. When bringing in any new bird the first rule always applies. Quarantine. During the quarantine process the two birds will be able to hear each other and may call to one another. When the quarantine is done, you can progressively move their cages together into the same room side by side if you wish. Then let them get to know each other through the bars for a few weeks. Just to warn you though...conures are sentry birds. They will send up a warning for just about anything. To curb the behavior a bit, I would not put the conure near a window. The slightest movement outside seems to worsen the behavior. My sun and IRN's are not BFF's but they do tolerate each other and don't attack each other. When they get to the point of play time together, just make sure your conure is flighted so he/she has a chance for escape if the mood strikes Willow to become aggressive. :D
I am owned by my birds...and I wouldn't have it any other way :D
