2 Questions.....
My hen, Boomer is finally here! The breeder told me that she was blue/violet, being new at all of this I didn't think anything of it other than I've got a chance at violet babies! Someone just told me that being split to violet is impossible. Is that correct?
Second question: I've totally forgotten how to use the genetic calculator, except for this basics
A friend has a Cinnamon Grey cock and a Pallid Turquoise Cobalt hen. Can someone tell me how they'd put those into the genetic calculator? [I have visual grey checked for the cock along with cinnamon, and visual turquoise, single dark factor as well as pallid for the hen] I just want to make sure I'm doing it right. lol.
Oh, and I lied: 3rd question!
If my Boomer is truly a split to violet, how do I put that in the genetic calculator....or could someone tell me what to expect from a matching with a turquoise grey cock?
Midas....Ring0neck....anyone
Thank you!

IMO the front bird is a Dark IndigoBlue Pallid. The head is too light for TurquoiseBlue as are the patches.
No split Violets are possible. You have a lovely Blue bird. Have fun!

Re: 2 Questions.....
I just talked to the breeder who said Boomer's parents were violet and the other was cobalt....if that helps at all?

Re: 2 Questions.....
Violet Blue x Dark Blue (Cobalt) =
25% Blue
25% Violet Blue
25% Dark Blue
25% Dark Violet Blue (Cobalt Violet)
Violet is dominant, there can never be a split Violet possible. Splits occur only in recessive and sex-linked mutations.

Re: 2 Questions.....
Hopefully you can see it better in the second picture, when she has her wing stretched out that it is actually dark dark dark blue, not black on the insides of the flight feathers....it looks black sometimes because of my crap camera, but it's actually dark blue.

Re: 2 Questions.....
Well, that sucks. I paid a lot of money for her because the breeder claimed that she was split to violet. I guess I should have done some more research before I paid....
Thanks everyone. I appreciate the help!

Re: 2 Questions.....
If you have a contract I would ask for a different bird or your money back. What that breeder did was deceitful. He may have had violet in the nest, but violet is visual. If he paired a sf violet to a blue then he could get both blue or sf violet. SF violet babies have a very bright purplish color to them. Sorry for what happened to you. Hopefully the breeder will make it right.

Re: 2 Questions.....
He said parents were violet and cobalt [which do make blue babies] and that the babies would all carry the gene for violet...it's partly my fault. I should have looked into it further.
I am a little bummed that if I do breed them, I'll have turquoise grey or just turquoise babies...turquoise grey isn't a very popular color.

Re: 2 Questions.....
Take her back (or get a partial refund). Give the seller the benefit of the doubt and as he may have thought what he said to you to be true. Probably is the case if you paid more than what one would expect to pay for a h/r Blue.
Re: 2 Questions.....
And you could get visual Blue, Grey, TurquoiseBlue and TurquoiseGrey babies from them.
Re: 2 Questions.....
The seller wasn't dishonest he was just ignorant of the genetics involved. I would deal with it on this basis.

Re: 2 Questions.....
Sorry for sounding so harsh. I've just had a lot of bad experiences with breeders here in Hawaii. And it's not a lack of knowledge. They truly try to deceive you. I apologize if I've offended anyone. I was only speaking from my experience instead of an overall.

Re: 2 Questions.....
Give the seller an opportunity to fix it first before taking his/her head to the chopping block.

Re: 2 Questions.....
Nobody's head is on the chopping block. I spoke to him and explained to him why she couldn't be split to violet; it was an honest mistake. He admitted that he didn't know much about genetics.Johan S wrote:Give the seller an opportunity to fix it first before taking his/her head to the chopping block.
I put Apollo [turquoise grey] and Boomer [Blue] in the genetic calculator and it comes up 50% turquoise grey and 50% turquoise. It said there wouldn't be any blue babies from the match.
I'll just keep my eye out for a SF violet female in my internet travels. Our birds are pets first, so the whole 'not split to violet' isn't going to kill me, but I wouldn't trade her back....even for a violet. She's here now, she's family.

Yes, we handled it privately.molossus wrote:Nala hi,
Nice to hear you put the bird before the color. you mentioned paying a lot of money on the premise that the bird carried the violet factor. now that you and the breeder(i presume) understand that the bird is a normal blue the pricing should be adjust accordingly.. or has that already happened.
I believe a honest mistake should be honestly corrected.
Now....anyone know where I can get a SF violet baby? Lol

Unless your bird is DF Turq (which if I remember correctly- he's not) then you'll need to check the 'splits to Blue' box as well.nalukaikamahine wrote: I put Apollo [turquoise grey] and Boomer [Blue] in the genetic calculator and it comes up 50% turquoise grey and 50% turquoise. Yep. It still comes up 50% turquoise and 50% turquoise grey even with the splits to blue box checked....hmmmmsheyd wrote:Unless your bird is DF Turq (which if I remember correctly- he's not) then you'll need to check the 'splits to Blue' box as well.nalukaikamahine wrote: I put Apollo [turquoise grey] and Boomer [Blue] in the genetic calculator and it comes up 50% turquoise grey and 50% turquoise. Re: 2 Questions.....
Which gen calc are you using?
Basic Genetics 101:
Homozygous = gene will be passed on 100%
Heterozygous= gene will be passed on (roughly) 50%
Turquoise = df* = Homozygous
TurquoiseBlue (or Grey in your case) = sf* = Heterozygous
So you see that 100% turquoiseBlue or TurquoiseGrey babies are not possible with your cock, and that you have the chance of Blue and Grey as well
*df (double factor) =2 copies of same gene will always pass on one copy.
*sf (single factor) only one copy, may or may not pass on gene.

Here is the calculator I'm using and the link to how I'm putting it in. Maybe I'm putting it in wrong?

hehe- works for me (:
try again-
tick 'visual' Grey(sf) & Turquoise and also 'splits to' Blue for Apollo, and 'visual' Blue for Boomer.
