Rajah and Sari

Post by Carly »

Heres some pics of my green IRN pair, Rajah and Sari.

Rajah is about 5 years old, I bred him myself and kept him as a pet.

Sari is not yet 1, I bought her handraised from a breeder in December 04 as a mate for Raj who gets lonely when Im at uni all day.

They have very different personalities, and Sari is definately the boss. They are so entertaining to watch, especially when they compete for my attention, and get very jealous if I'm holding one and not the other!

Heres some pics of them:
in this first one they are almost sitting still! This dosent happen very often because as soon as they see me with the camera they think its show off time! Raj loves trying to kiss the camera
Image

heres them in a more usual moment... Raj has climbed on top of the door and Sari wants to bite his toes because she's jealous.. you can see the concerned look on Raj's face!
Image

by the way, i think its important to say that these birds are outside in these pictures... which is an irresponsible place for a pet bird to be.. but let me explain!

Both have their wings clipped, and they are very familiar with the environment surrounding their cage. Every day I move them from inside to outside, and to get there, we have to walk around outside. I know this is risky, but in this case the 'outside' is only a path a few feet wide, with the house on one side and a 6-10ft fence on the other. if they were to take fright, they could not fly over the fence as that would involve turning into a helicopter and flying vertically up to clear either the fence or the house! this is not likely with clipped wings.. but I am still careful.[/img]

They are amazingly beautiful. I love green ringnecks, not that Im colourist theyre all stunning but theres something about the green male that is really magic.

She has a very mischievous look and he is just spectacular. They look to be in great condition, fresh air and real sunlight does them good!

I take Datsun outside all the time, she has clipped wings and I know a gust could take her but you try telling her when shes got her heart set on coming with me that she cant.... It wouldnt go down well. I always hold her close to me with my other hand wrapped over her back. When we go to the park she runs around on the ground or sits on her basket though.

Do you find they are any less tame living together than before you got your girl?

In the first pic, are their eyes pinned? I have never seen my girl do this. She is about 5 months old. What's up with that?

Mikaela I was looking at your girl in your latest pics and it looks as though her eyes are completely black... am I right? Datsun has a black pupil surrounded by blue iris and white eyeball just like a human with blue eyes.

India is unusual with her eyes, not a freak, please dont take that the wrong way. Dats at 5 months had eyes as I described above.

I think shes gorgeous anyway but I really cant explain those deep dark eyes.

Maybe someone more experienced than I can give you some more info.

Thanks for the responses guys! for some reason the page wont let me see the responses when i click on my thread.. I had to get here through Datson's profile!? is there something i can do about this?

Anyways..

Datsun: you hit the nail on the head when you said Sari looks mischevious. She is ALWAYS up to mischief! And I'm glad im not the only one who finds Raj stunning! (although he thinks he's pretty stunning too.. just ask his mirror.. lol) The greens are georgous arent they! I used to breed lutino's too, in fact they were the ones who attracted me to ringnecks, but they dont have the variation that the greens do.

They arent less tame at all. In fact it probably makes them easier to deal with because I find Raj isnt as moody. He used to be a bit cranky and would only like to be handled on 'his terms' ie if he didnt feel like coming out of his cage, he wasnt coming. But together, they both get really excited whenever they see me. its almost like they are hyper affectionate towards me (i think its the competitiveness).

Mikaela: in the first pic Raj has his eyes pinned, but i dont think Sari does. She definately does pin her eyes alot, especially if im looking at her and saying 'sari girl' .. im hoping it will be her first 'real' word (ie not copied from raj).

Datsun: yes all of mine have had white/blueish iris surrounding the pupil, but i think its usually darker when they are bubs.. although Sari isnt very old (i got her just weaned in December)

Yes, my babies eyes are always pitch black and she has NEVER pinned them, ever.

So, this is a very uncommon trait? Their eyes usually looks somewhat more human than all black?

yes all the ones i ever had in the past as i recall since i don't recall keeping them more then a few month( my grandma used to do rescue work with wild caught irn) were not of this color correct me if im wrong but this is a very rare trait ( but i can be wrong since the one my grandma had old one with rings already showing so it might be baby trait) I think irn will be a better person to ask.

I don't know what's up with the all black eyes. If you look closely, she doesnt even have a ring around her outter eye. I wonder if this is a good rare trait or bad? Doesnt matter to me, she is perfect!

Here she is from the front.

Carly your birds are so beautiful. How do you get the feathers so neat and groomed? Especially on the chest. Our baby's feathers are just all over the place like he just rolled out of bed :P He doesn't get out much because we live in an apartment but he does sit in the sun alot. His favourite place is the window sill. Could that be the reason? The fact that he doesn't get much fresh air?

Jonathon: your bird looks lovely! he reminds me alot of my boy :)

Mikaela: im not sure what's up with the all black eyes either (she is still beautiful though!) i have noticed however that when i bring my birds into dim lighting that their pupils widen alot, making their eyes black. do your baby's eyes change in bright light?

Selma: thankyou for the compliments, but i think my birds keep themselves well groomed and i cant really take any credit for it! well beyond giving them a good diet.. i dont think its the 'fresh air' but as long as your baby isnt chewing/plucking his feathers i wouldnt worry too much.. maybe he just hasnt learned self deportment skills yet!

That was actually my first thought... perhaps she is blind.

I have since been trying to determine if she sees or senses where things are.

Mikaela,

Your ringneck is a baby and all young ringnecks have black eyes. Their eyes start to change colors around 5-7 months.

I agree with ringneck, my irn's eyes were black, when he was young, but they changed now. they look normal. i have a younger irn, and she has black eyes also, and i think they r changing already. so yeah, i think they have them dark when they r small.

Carly: they are a wonderful pair and make me more keen to get a mate for Kai later on (I am very attracted to the Latino's now) but the blue took my attention right off the bat.

I love the IRN's and how smooth they can be, their feathers are like one piece of soft velvet, not like thousands of little feathers at all. Such clean pristine Birds. Especially after molt and when they are getting older. I can't wait for Kai to get his ring in. I think it really adds a Majesty to the males.

IRN's love to groom and keep themselves top notch.

Kai has a pale blue grey ring around his black pupil. He pins his eyes when I get close to him and talk and especially when I kiss his beak, he loves!!! it.

Scarlet: glad you found a name :D

She's still a baby, esp if that photo is recent, she looks bubbyish. Babys have the solid black eyes and they lose it later, you Also find they get an orange circle around their eyes when they are older that the babies dont have. And also the bottom half of their beaks go black, I think this is darker on males than females. But I havent looked enough to be sure

Thanks for the comments everyone :)

I really cant take to much credit for their appearance, they are just naturally beautiful! The males especially have so much variation in their colour - he has a silvery/blue sheen at the back of his neck and that lovely bright green around his face, and yellow under the tail and wings... they are definately not just a plain green bird!

yes Sari is still a baby, just one year old (her birthday is the same day as my boyfriend's!)

Datsun: they have a pretty varied diet, but nothing extravagant. Pellets at daytime, seed mix overnight, and some fruit or veg on the side.

Raj & Sari Update!

Post by Carly »

Well its been a while since Ive visited this site and with good reason - I started a new job this year and moved house, as well as the usual christmas chaos.

It was crazy for the birds too as they had to live with my parents for a few months while I arranged something more permanent. Im now living in a unit where pets arent allowed (which was a hard decision to make as I knew the birds wouldnt be able to come here - but had to be made for other reasons) so my birds have taken up residence at my boyfriend's house just down the road.

Also, since Im now earning a decent wage Ive splashed out and had a brand new cage custom made for the birds. Its 1.2m wide 1.2m high and 0.7m deep. its also on legs so it stands about 1.6m high and its built to be an outdoors/patio cage. so far its working out great and Im really happy with it!

Image

Heres Raj - cheeky as ever

Image

and Sari - still playing the monster even though I thought she'd finished bluffing!

Image

I was expecting bad behaviour until they settled in, particuarly since they have been living at my parents for so long where they picked up lots of bad habits. At my parents place, their initial reaction was to flop on the floor of the cage screaming whenever my parents approached. then once they realised dad was infact brining them food, not trying to murder them, Raj started to get very nippy and try to bite dad as he was putting food in the cage. not to mention the screaming at 4am! if you want to hear ringnecks really scream just put them in competition with a few roosters... but by the end Raj was stepping up on Dad's hand, and Sari was smooching up to anyone bearing apples.

So surprisingly, they have taken to the new cage really well. I was expecting screaming and every bad behaviour in the book, especially since my boyfriend lives with 6 other uni students, and Raj and Sari have a particular phobia of strangers. But they have been on their best behaviour! smoochy as ever towards me, very accepting of things happening around them, and very quiet.

Heres one last pic - Raj wanting to hog the camera

Thanks Dani

Raj is certainly a character, he's very cheeky! Im told he's been luring unsuspecting housemates by whistling at them while they hang out their laundry, then when they come over to investigate he screams at them to go away.. naughty bird!

the job - its keeping me busy! (and paying for things like new cages)
