Hi. We recently got a pair of ringnecks who have breeded once before. We are trying to get them to breed now but it doesn't seem to be working.. we have the nest box attached to the cage. We haven't seen them enter the box at all. The female will do the clucking thing and put her head back sometimes especially in the morning, and the male just runs his beak over her head and yells a little. I guess he doesn't want to mate with her? Also she does the clucking thing if I approach her and talk to her, then the male screams at her. These are not tame birds and the male is really scared of us... we think he won't breed because he is so scared. What would be the best course of action from here? Should we separate them and try to make him less afraid of us or just leave them alone in a separate quiet room? Is this too early for them to be breeding in the first place?? We live in USA
Please help any advice is appreciated!

Re: Need some advice
I have having a similar problem with my pair. They have been doing this mating dance for about two weeks now. I finally got a nesting box a few day ago but they don't go in. The female paces around the bottom of the cage picking at the newspaper between the grate. I put a pile of pine shaving in the bottom of the cage by the nesting box. I worry that I may of missed the window because I couldn't find a box in time. I got the pair in July. I was told that the female did lay a egg las year but that was all I was told. I was also told that the male is 4 and the female is 3. Some one please help.

Re: Need some advice
Hello,
I wouldnt worry about them. I live in Texas and last year my birds laid eggs at different times throughout the winter. Some pairs started around late December but most laid till late January. I wouldnt check the nest box too much. I know its hard to stay away from it but give them a bit of privacy. Its ok to check but do it every couple of days. Put in a good amount of shavings in the box, the female will start working it quite a bit and will throw out a lot. Also, I feed them more soft foods prior and during the egg laying and raising of the chicks. This way the male can start practicing feeding the female and its easier to feed their babies. GOOD LUCK and hope this helps!!!!!

Mine are scared to go in the box lol. I saw them one day going in for a few seconds but after that I haven't seen them go again. The male doesn't know what to do when the female is clucking, just stands there and next to her and make some noices.
Edit: Anyone think I Should put them in a room by themselves?
