Hi Everyone
I am new to all of this IRN world. I found Simon 4 years ago and he has been living with my brother and sis in law...they couldn't give Simon all the attention he needed so I gladly took him back. He has adjusted so well in the last 6 months and seems really happy. I do have a few questions for all of you professionals... Since we got Simon his tail feathers have broken off. I thought this was because he is SOOOO much more active now? Any other thoughts or signs we should look for in broken tail feathers? Also, I can't get a clear answer for when he will go through a molt. How often? Also, he had some cracks in his beak, which a pet shop owner said was from lack of good diet. He was eating seeds only when we got him. he eats so many different things now but the only things we know of to not give him are avacados and chocolate. Anything else?
thanks everyone

Kimberly

Hi Kimberly, you will find some fabulous information and ideas on diet under the diet and housing link in this forum. Sorry I can't help you with the feather problem but I am sure someone here may have some ideas for you. Hope all goes well

Hi there and welcome! Thats so lovely that you took Simon in!
As for the feathers 'breaking off' and cracks in the beak, I would say this is true about the bad diet. Try to give him the best bird diet you can, maybe some suppliments? I cannot judge as Im not a professional, I would get him tested for everything by the vet, a full rundown of his condition. I do hope he gets better.
Moults tend to be once a year (after breeding season, usually summer here in Australia mine will moult) But younger IRNs may have little moults here and there, once they get older they seem to be more regular (once a year).

Yes no avacado or chockies, anything with caffiene! Also foods not too salty (such as salty flavoured chips/fries), if my birds do get given a chippy on a rare occasion, I will wash them down with water.

Goodluck and keep us updated. :)
