I'm Edna, a new member with my first bird. I am a retired RN, and my DH is a retired engineer. We lost our last pet ( Toonces )a cat in April of 07. He was the last of three beautiful cats. He was 23 and the love of our life. We had decided no more pets, because it was just to hard to loose them.
On October 30th we heard about a bird that was being neglected and needed a home. We went to the home where the bird was. They said he was an Indian Ring neck and about 3 years old. A wild screaming bird he was ! The cage was so dirty, he was dirty and a mess. We bring him home.
Well, he was a she after I researched the bird. We named her Emma. We carried her and had her nails trimmed and her wings clipped. Bought a new cage and the correct food, and all the books we could get our hands on for advice. Emma would bite anything in her path, and scream to the top of her lungs.
Yesterday made 60 days that we have had Emma. It has been a struggle to say the least. The screaming is down somewhat, at least tolerable. The biting has calmed down quite a bit. She has attached herself to me. She tolerates my DH. The one thing we haven't been able to do is put our hands on her. I have a little bread basket (kind of silly, but it works !) that she will step right on, and I can take her anywhere. She has also started wanting me to rub her neck, chest, and back... but only with a spoon (yes, a spoon !). She makes this cute little clucking sound and holds her chin up for me to rub. I tried the spoon in the beginning because she was such a biter. The next move will be to get her to let me use my hand. Once this happens, I plan on starting the step up training.
I feel like I have made worlds of progress. I am taking it nice and slow hoping that with each step I'm doing the right thing. I am so happy I found this site. I read the post daily.
