Greetings from Indiana.....and new to being an IRN mom.
We just adopted a 6 year old male IRN who seems to be having a rather tough time adjusting to his new home. Trying to read everything here to make sure he gets whatever he possibly needs to make the adjustment to a new home. He is still plucking feathers but lets us hand feed him and walks all over us and goes back into the cage fairly easily. He is a beautiful blue color and talks a few words. Make some awful noises at times but for the most part is cute as can be.
I am reading what types of foods can be given but have not found any information about quantity of food to be given daily. luckily i found this chat and all the valuble information from all of you so I will continue to read and learn what we can do to make him happy and keep him healthy. I am currently looking for a vet for him as well so he can have a checkup and make sure that the feather picking is just from the stress of a new home and nothing else. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

well, basicly it's easy to eyeball it and see how much they would need. these guys eat like 25 percent of their bod weight a day to be healthy and active. I keep all fresh foods like vegis and fruits etc in a seperate bowl from any pellts, seed or grain. and change the water several times a day. my birds like to dunk their food to soften it.,

Thanks for the advice about feeding. It is obvious that he has not has his wings clipped as he has finally ventured out of his cage the past two days and took a little flight around the room. He must not have been let out of his cage at his previous house because he is not really good at flying, ran into window once and wall, scared me more than him I think.
Still doing a little plucking on his feathers, I am hoping he settles down before he is bald! Eating well and took a bath today and talks up a storm.
Going to go look at Pet Store to see what else I can buy for him tomorrow, needs toys and different types of food and stuff to spoil him rotten. I misted him the past evening and he seemed to be scared of the spray at first but then seemed to enjoy it. Loves my son to death and sits on him while he plays XBOX, always wants to know what I am doing while typing at my desk, doesnt seem afraid of cat or dog, but we are careful to put them out when he is loose in the room. Seems to be settling down a bit more since we brought him home. Will find vet and get him checked out, just to make sure he is in tip top shape. He does tend to stand on one foot, is this normal or could there be something wrong with his foot? I think he could stand a nail trim, they are pretty sharp when he is walking all over your head. Will get some pics posted soon.
Much better

Skippy is settling in nicely. He started saying some new words already, which really surprised me since I didnt think he would for a long time if ever. He is about 6 years old and very loving. He is getting used to all the people and pets in the house and has taken an interest in the youngest of the kids, my twin 14 year olds. He does well with all of us, even the oldest who is 20 and scared to death of him.
My vet said they have a vet who comes in once a week who is experienced with IRN's so we will make an appt soon to get him a check up and his nails trimmed...ouch they are long! What is the word on clipping or not clipping wings? IS there a thread about that? I am trying to read what I can to get myself as educated as possible about IRN"s as this is our first.
Thanks and have a great week!
Sandy

Hi & welcome
Can't wait to see pics of Skippy, he sounds very cute!
Good to read Skippy is now settling into family. It is a worrying time to see if the birds will like it in their new family
