Not talking yet...

Hello everyone,

Our 7 month old Lutino IRN isn't talking yet (although she can do the cat call thing.)

Do all IRN's talk? Does anyone know the percentages? I really don't care if she ever talks, because she is so awesome, but it would be a nice perk!

Most ringnecks don't start talking until around 1 to 1 1/2 years old, though some do talk earlier. Birds are just like people where each one is individual and progresses at their own rate. It is true that some don't learn to talk, but that is true with all bird species. It sounds like Maize is right on track though if he is doing the wolf whistle at 7 months, so maybe he will learn to talk. Does he mummble to himself like he is trying to talk? My 4 1/2 month old IRN mummbles all the time, which is very cute. The breeder told me his mother had a 200+ vocabulary, so I am hoping he will learn to talk as well, but only time will tell. But talk or no talk, he is the center of my world, next to my 6 year old daughter that is! We take him out with us often. Last night we took him to the mall and he rode around on my shoulder the entire time. I had a flight suite on him with a lanyard so he couldn't get away or poop on me.

Hi Lisa,

Any trick to get him to wear the flight suit. I only managed to get it on my IRN once and he seemed stressed and wanted to remove it.

Regards

No sorry, no trick. My IRN is pretty easy going. The first time he wore it, he did pick at it alot, but he knows what the word NO means and everytime he would bite at it, I would tell him NO and gently push his beak off the suit and this seemed to work. The second time he wore it, he picked at it a little and again I told him NO and he would stop. I think he knows if he wants to go out with us, then he has to wear it. His main issue with wearing it though is he can't preen himself very good and I can tell that this bugs him. He has only worn it twice, but I figure the more he wears it, the more he will get used to it and eventually he will leave it alone, but he has never seemed stressed over wearing it.

What size flight suits fit IRNs? I want to buy one for Datsun but for the life of me can't work out what size she'll be :?

Tony didn't start saying things until about 1 year, but he was kinda mimiking step up for a while. One day you'll hear words floating though the house and suddenly realize those strange sounds he has been making for the past three months were his attempts to speak.

If you want to cheat and speed the process up tho.....keep him in the same room as a quaker.

The sizing chart for the flight suits indicate that an IRN should have the Large size. That is what I bought for Tiki and it seems a little big, but not so much that he can't get out of it, but still some room to grow. I don't know what age an IRN is fully grown at, but I have seen some that look bigger than Tiki and he is almost 5 months old. Then I was at a bird store over the weekend and I saw a IRN that was 7 months old and he was smaller than Tiki. I notified the store owner though, because thie IRN didn't look good to me and I was afraid he might be ill.

Lucky you for finding it on Ebay. I looked and looked and couldn't find any on there. Do they have any others? And if you don't mind, how much was it? I am going to try and make some other ones, before I buy anymore, but Tiki does like to chew on it and has already made a few small holes in it!
