I am getting a baby IRN this weekend, and I purchased a HUGE cage for it, and then i started to think..maybe i should get 2, so it doesnt get lonely while I am away.

Now my question is, by having 2 of them in 1 cage will it lessen my bonding with them, as they may turn to each other and not need me attention as much. Id prefer to bond with the bird as much as possible, so if this would be a lessening factor, i will stick with only 1 bird in a huge cage.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I think if you get another IRN straight away then the two would bond to each other rather than you. If you wait till the bird has formed a bond with you before bringing another bird into your life, then it can still bond with the other bird (if they get along) but hopefully you will still have a bond with the bird but I don't think it would be as close as if just you and your new one.

I have a tame Sun Conure who was very cuddly but put him in an aviary with his (at the time) girlfriend. They are both still tame and ambush me when I go into their cage, but he isn't as cuddly to me anymore as he was prior. I do spend a bit of time with them during the day. I am always going out there to talk and to pat them.

Also depending on how territorial your bird becomes of his cage, he might not like a new intruder in his space

If you are worried about him becoming bored and lonely while you are away, you can provide him with lots of toys, both foraging and wooden, to keep him busy. I have a few "spare" toys here and rotate them every few days so they have a "new" toy to play with and don't become so bored with the one they have at the time. I also like to change my cages around occasionally so they don't get bored with the same decore lol

You could also leave a radio/cd player on so the bird has a bit of background noise to keep him occupied, or the tv every now and then.
This would be a great time to record a few words/phrases and let that play while you are out. Never know, your bird might surprise you one day when you get home to a new greeting!!!

You could also provide him with visual stimulation by putting him near a window every so often so he can look out and see whats happening in the outside world
