Parrot Pellets.

Post by celtic_aura »

How many of you feed your IRN pellets? And how often. And what is the tastiest kind? I have some pellets here, but Gigi bird refuses to eat them. Is there a trick to getting them to eat them? And does he really need them? I guess I'm just looking for as much information on pellets as I can get. I realized I might have been feeding him too many sunflower seeds and I'm looking for an alternative.
Thanks!

I feed my bird mostly Roudybush pellets. I flattened them in with the food his breeder had been giving him (seeds, dried fruit, etc.), gradually increasing the ratio of pellets to breeder's food, and he took to it pretty easily. I don't think he really likes them all that much, but he eats them and they're good for him.

I tried the pellets and I thought they were actually pretty reasonable tasting for pet food. Like bran cereal with some apple and cinnamon flavors. :P

I've also used the pellets, crushed into powder, to bake him birdy bread with other finely ground ingredients including flour, cornmeal, almonds, broccoli, raisins, egg and shell, etc. He goes nuts for the stuff and that seems to have gotten him more interested in the pellets because they are perhaps 40% of the birdy bread by volume.

You could also try Lafeber's Nutri-Berries. My little guy took to them instantly and he just inhales the things. His eyes pin continuously while he eats them and you cannot touch him at all while he's chowing on Nutri-Berries because he's very protective of them. Must be full of crack or something because my bird's an addict! My vet recommended them and said the bird could live a pretty healthy life on Nutri-Berries alone because they are nutritionally complete, but I only give them as treats.

 Very similar, lol.

Roudybush conversion took less than a day, lol. Hane was picking it out and leaving the old pellets in the dish. I had used it before with breeding lovebirds and liked it then, I still like it. He always has them availible in his cage to munch when I sleep in.

Also feed nutriberries in Hane's foraging toys. He <3's them. A LOT.

Of course, veggies and fruits too (most of his diet)! And very occasionally, a few sunflower seeds as a treat.

I've been called 'birdbrained' before, but somehow I don't think this is what they meant. say:hah-nay
