Kitty cat...

Hey ya'll

I have a kitty cat and she likes to hang on the side of the cage and watch my IRN. India (the IRN doesnt seem to mind it.) Should I allow them this 'bonding time' or not?

The bird isnt scared of the kitty and when she gets tired of being stared at she bites at the kitty until she hops down. Let me know what you think. I have heard an old wives tale saying a cat could give a bird a heart attack. To be honest with you, think India would take the kitty if it came to that. The kitty is much more worried about the bird than the bird is the kitty.

DO NOT ENCOURAGE THIS BEHAVIOUR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A cat hanging off the cage could cause serious stress to a bird, even if you don't notice it now, it could cause problems later on, the bird gets tired of defending it's territory from the cat and or the cat gets fed up with the bird biting at it and decides to take a bite back.

my cats are not allowed to even put a foot on the cage!! that is the bird's territory, and the cat could cause serious damage to the bird and could even kill it without intending to. The cat might not give the bird a heart attack but one bite could kill your bird if you do not seek medical treatment! Cats saliva contains a toxin that kills birds within hours.

A cat will never forget it's hunting instinct and you should NEVER have the cat and bird out together in the same room, even with supervision!

Advice taken. Wow, saliva can kill. I have so much to learn, poor India. Her mom is an idiot.

No more cage clinging. My kitty listens well so I will put a stop to this today. To be safe, I am going to start putting the kitty in my room when I leave.

You are right, that is the birds territory but she sure seemed to enjoy the kitty sometimes, not so much others.

it's good to have them out of the room when you aren't around!! I have a bird room and the door is ALWAYS closed when I'm not there to supervise, if even for 5 minutes if I go outside! cats are a bit on the slow side to learn hehe good luck with the two :) they can live in harmony if supervision is taken!

The breeder, when I asked, said hahaha that baby bird will run that cat out the door! No worries. I was like  so I never tried to introduce other than when I held Ms. Kitty a few feet from the cage to let the two check eachother out. Ms. India starts swinging and playing like she is actually putting on a show for the kitty. And the kitty would just cling there and watch as if it was the coolest thing she had ever seen.

*Then* one day India swooped and got the kitty's ear (before her wings were clipped). The kitty got this yum, good bird look in her eyes and has had it ever since. Now, I believe the kitty would try to eat India. My lord, if I came home to that, ya'll would have to administer shock treatment to get my head back on.

cats seem to have an understanding of what is right and what is wrong...now the thing is, they don't always follow it hahaha
as long as you are careful things can go smoothly! though accidents do happen! somehow one of my cats go to my hamsters, the poor thing was killed, but I believe they did not intend to! they were sitting there trying to 'wake him up' when I found them! they've been pretty good about staying away from the birds, except when there are birds outside they go insane! cats are interesting creatures!! in 20 years of birding experiance I've never had an incident with a cat and bird! except when my grey took a piece of ear out of one of my old cats!
