Cage question + Possible problems

Post by wannabe »

Hi i'm new. I am hoping to soon get an IRN from a local aviary (same one I got my Kakariki from)

I currently have a Kakariki in a large cage that is 31" wide and 21" deep x 43" high (He is 5 years old, lives in dining room)
I have another bird cage that I use for my 2 rats that is 34 wide, 15 deep, 32 high. (Kaks old cage, in my sons room)
Both of these cages have bar space that is just between 6/8" 7/8"

So since I could have rehoused the rats and moved everyone around so that the IRN (I am hoping to get gets the bigger cage I now see after reading this forum the bar spacing is too big)

So I have found another cage that I can afford but it is slightly smaller than the one the Kakariki is in (the Kak is smaller than the length with tail a IRN would be) so that makes me kind of sad that the bigger bird will be in a smaller cage.
Here are the dimensions
# Cage Dimension: 31''w X 18''d X 36"h (less than half inch bar spacing)
# Overall Height 63" high with stand.

However here is my big question after reading how inquisitive etc the IRN are (my Kak is a very quiet sole) would the IRN not stick his head through the bars of the Kaks cage to see him while out and about ?? I am planning on keeping them in the same room :(

I feel like I will be onto a loosing plan even if I buy the lesser bar spacing cage.
Does anyone have other birds with cages with larger bar spacing?

Thankyou for any insight ..

It's not the bar spacing I would be worried about 1/2 inch is fine. I would be worried about their toes being bit if one is in the cage and one is out. Birds in general do not like having another bird up over the heads. You can place a peice of plexi glass or a wooden platform on top of each cage to prevent toes being bitten.

Hope this helps
