He will be all grown up soon...but is that dark 'patch' of feathers normal for a normal green to have on his breast?

<< looking for the dark patch , I see normal shades of green in even normal patterns.

I can see what dani is talking about, its the part that is puffed up in the fifth pic down. And Im pretty sure she didnt mean it in a bad way she is asking is he just a normal green or something else.If you look straight under the ring it is darker then goes really light.

no I didn't think she was , just looking for what she is seeing. You mean the different colour green on the crop area, like a cuff around his neck ?

Maybe its more the flash making thicker feathers show a different shade of green, or a shadow ? could just be an individuality of Baby :D

Datsun is a bit like that too, a little darker in the crop area, only just looked at him and saw it... Maybe its just something normal that we never noticed before?

Maybe it's something that comes with maturity , will have to go look at pickle and if not there watch for it as he matures.

I think it may be a maturity thing and a close up photo thing aswell, Im not able to get too close to cheeky to have a look but he looks more like the colour of the darker patch all over. Cheeky is only just 1 this year so he is still just a baby.

The dark patch on the chest area is common among Blue and Green IRNs especially males. The reason? I'm not sure but I think it is one of the effects of the genes that give each species their unique appearance. Currently, there is really no practical way for us to study those plumage modifier genes responsible in making birds look like its own species. It just seems like there is more dark pigmentation (melanin) deposited on the chest area. Somewhat similar to Cleartails on this photo:

Image

On Zahir Rana's site "Psittacula World" http://home.wanadoo.nl/psittaculaworld/ ... rameri.htm he describes Green and Blue IRNs' body plumage as:

"Body: General Green; Greyish tinge on breast"

So even Zahir notices it like I do on several of my birds. On some, the greyish or darkish breast tinge is subtle and yet on others, it is more pronounced. Here are some more visuals....

Image

Imran's male IRN on the right also shows a pronounced dark chest. The left male doesn't. So I suspect that some IRNs will carry the minor "dark chest" gene and some won't.

Wooooo Yooooo!!!

My Baby is normal :!:

Shew, yall had me worried :!:

I always liked it until I realized only Datsun had it so I was like hrm... gonna go to a source on this! I feel much better now! :D

I could never put my finger on why Baby looked *so* much like datsun... now I realize it... the plumage. Same, only Baby is maybe darker a bit, if any. See image #5. So Datsun! lol

Thank you so much for your awesome post! I will sleep well tonight and smile a bit every time I notice his MAN CHEST lmao!
