DNA SEXING

Post by nichole123 »

I was wondering about DNA sexing. Most sites I have seen want you to clip the birds toenail until it bleeds. Does this hurt? Will it be uncomfortable for the next few weeks? Will I make my baby afraid of a nail trim? I can't do blood feathers because we don't have any... might have some soon though :D , but I know that hurts to pull them  ... any opinions? :?:

I have done DNA testing using the toe nail method. You will need to have some baking soda, flour or a product called Kwik stop close at hand.

Don't clip so much off that you have an overly short nail. Just barely get the nail to bleed, it won't take much. Then put the baking soda/powder, flour or Kwik Stop on the nail. Allow it to clot the blood then set them back down on something soft.

If you baby is small they won't remember the trimming. You could always have a friend hold and do the nail trim and then you didn't do it.

Just make sure you watch the nail to make sure the bleeding has stopped. If the bird is older don't have any rough perches in the cage, this will aggravate the nail you clipped a little short.

Good Luck

Cut the nail last night... I felt horrible... it took about a minute for the bleeding to stop... I got evil eyes for about an hour but he forgave me... today it's like it never happend except I have to keep telling him to stop picking at it.

:( Poor little guy. Hope he feels better soon. I've only heard of plucking a feather or 2 for DNA testing. I don't think I could bring myself to do it.

When I did DNA test at my little IRN I just had to take a little blod from the cuticle. putting a small "hole" with a needle, easy no bleading afterwards or anything.

That test was send to south afrika for DNA result.
