:D
I am from QUEENSLAND AUSTRALIA IRN's name is dusty ( dusty blue coloured IRN )and is around 6 months old

Hi all have only just found out about this site after thru being told a few things by my local pets shop owner .
One of the things i have been told concerns the fact i have 2 cats in the house and a fear that one of them would attack my bird so therefore my bird has not been out of her ( i think it's female ) cage and i have a fear of her going wild again.
The information the shop owner gave me is if the bird has not been out of the cage for some time a rolled up piece of news paper if the bird bites give it a tap on the back with the paper don't know if this is right or not but it seems to be working with my IRN .

So she has destroyed one feeder 2 perches wholf wistles real well and appears to be starting to talk , one thing i am wondering about through is the lower beak of these birds supposed to go black or not cause mine has and before you ask yes the upper beak is still red.
finally i am glad to have found this site as if i live as long as this bird is said to "ie 25-30 years " and the information i have found here already has helped me in what to get and care for my IRN

thank you for reading andy

Hi Andy and Dusty,

Welcome! Firstly I do not recommend you strike your bird with anything including newspaper... if you need to distract her from biting you then use a toy, peg, food that she can bite instead.

As far as the cats go..... lock them outside or in another room when its Dustys special attention time. You are right many IRNs can get very nippy without daily handling.

Time and patience will go a long way and believe me its well worth the effort.

I am brand new to IRN's too but beg of you NEVER to stike them in any way. After all, we are working so hard to make them tame and friendly. They mimic us. We work day to day to get them TO TRUST US rather than to expect a newspaper wacking.

My bird is only 8 weeks old and I can tell her No in a firm voice and it hurts her feelings (still bites the hell out me me but it atleast gets to her a little). If I say NO INDIA! too firmly (never loudly) AND give her dirty looks on top of closing the cage, the little booger sticks her head under her wing and looks at me with one eye as if to say "sorry Momma" sooooo cute. She is a MEAN HEN, she lunges EVERYTIME and hunny she aint bluffing, but this is mostly because I have white tip nails. I only realized this matched her feeding syringe to a "T" yesterday so I am taking all of my polish off and asking her to step up on my closed fist. My hands can take a few more bites, my fingers are sore and need a break.

She has had one eye closed since lastnight and wont open it. I am getting worried. I noticed it after she took a bath and was scratching and preening her head. Could she have put her own eye out? BTW, I am a neurotic, worry-wart that isnt too much fun to have around because of my anxiety and excessive worry. Sorry guys, please bare with me long enough to help me raise my baby girl.
