Dominant behaviour??

Hi guys,
I know this isn't a lorikeet site but I'm hoping someone could halp me with a behavioural question.
I have a 2yr old handraised varied red crown lorikeet (Nibbler) and we bought a handraised purple crown lorikeet (Anubis) a week ago. I'm trying to socialise them and get them to become friends because I'd like to have Anubis in Nibbler's cage. I know it hasn't been long but the other day I had them out on my lap together and Nibbler would occasionally lash out to nip at Anubis. Whenever she did this I said no and put her back on her cage for a few minutes.
But my big question is, Nibbler would fluff up and ruffle her feather every 30 seconds or so when they were on my lap together and ANubis did it a couple of times too but not as much. I know Nibbler isnt one to fluff up much and I'm thinking she's trying to establish she's the boss. Am I right? Or is it a getting to know you or mating behaviour?
Am I doing the right thing of taking them out for play time together so soon, or should I get them used to each other's presence first (their cages are next to each other)?
