ok here is the deal that i think my irn is ready to mate or something
can any one tell me the mating behaviour that a female shows
coz before my father had a female cockutail and when she had her mating seasons she would go inside the news paper and lay eggs there but empty eggs as there was no male to fertilize them

and now my female irn (rose) is also going inside the news paper and making love noises and then she would peak out and call me through this tune that she makes

as i have been giving her the training that everytime she makes the tune i go to her and encourage the talking behaviour but when she screames she gets ignored

so now she is going under the news paper and then making that noise and when i come near the cage to encourage her she copmes out and goes round the bottom of the cage and finds a comfortable corner and puts her head up and makes this coo coo sound as in telling me to give her head scritches and stuff

now the question comes in which is is this a mating behaviour fora female or is she getting ready to lay empty eggs ???
can she lay empty eggs???
what as a responsible owner am i supposed to do
any help anyone

and one more thing i dont know her age as got her from someone who got her from someone am sure most of you know the story

Pearl your ringneck is doing mating behaviors. She will lay eggs if she has nesting material to do so. You don't have a male so of course they will be infertile. The best thing you can do is take her nesting papers out of the cage. Letting a bird lay eggs without a male could be dangerous for her. Things to be worried about would be egg binding and depleating her calicum. If you can't take the papers out put a grate in the cage so she can not get to them.

ummm... she doesnt really has any nesting material in her cage but yeah i have lined the bottom of the cage with newspaper
do you think i should get a sand paper for cage bottom sold in the petshops
so i wont have to use news paper which my sweet little rose has mistaken for nesting material

Ringnecks are not picky when it comes to nesting material so the best thing to do is get her a cage that has a grate in the bottom where she can not get to the paper or what ever you have lining the bottom. It's also more sanitary for her not to be walking and picking up left overs in her poop. No need to feel sorry for her she is only doing what instinct is telling her to do. Most pet birds live happy lives without a mate. Men who needs them.

I wouldn't go with the sandpaper, just like its not good to have sandpaper perches. It can be very irritating even causing sores on their feet.

If there is no nesting box it is unlikely she will create a nest that she would feel compelled to lay in, females tend to work the box for days before they lay their clutch. Of course this does not mean she won't lay eggs.
