Hi, I've just aquired my first IRN. He is about 12 weeks old. Someone directed me to this site as I had questions about diet.
I hope to learn more about these beautiful fids by being a part of this forum.

Hi,
I have 2 IRN babies too. They are about 10 weeks old. I feed them on the cage floor in a white ceramic dish. I put a mixture of seeds, pumpkin seeds, zupreme on the bottom of the dish. I heat up some frozen veggies, like peas and corn or whatever and add some peeled diced apples or pears, orange pieces, carrot sticks, diced cucumbers, seeded and things like that and put a layer of all this on top of the seeds, so they can munch on the veggies for breakfast and forage for the seeds underneath. Later on in the day, I dump and clean the bowl and add the seed, zupreme mixture back in the bowl and add a couple nutritious snacks on top like yogurt covered dried fruit or a couple of those seed ball treats. I also keep millet in their cage at all times and fresh water.
Once in a while you can add one of those seed stick treats, but i wouldn't do it too often. Later I will add peanuts to their diet, although I'm sure they would be happy to eat them now. I want to get them used to the healthy stuff first.
it seems at this age, they are very ready for baths and are trying to take a bath in their 2 inch diameter bowl, so I want to get them a bigger stainless steel bowl for that. For now you can spray them with a bottle of water with a sprayer. They love this and will probably lift their wings for you and turn around to enjoy it.
Enjoy your new baby

I forgot to add broccoli, grapes, green beans and red and green peppers to the list of vegetables and even romaine lettuce. I would experiment with different kinds and mix it all up each day, although some days I'm busy and they just get some heated carrots and peas. Also I give my birds uncooked corn on the cob and they love it.
After they've learned to eat their veggies and fruits well, you can give them to them in a separate dish each morning, so that you don't have to waste so much seed and zupreme when having to empty the bowl later. Also you can raise the dishes up higher in the cage. Some birds probably do just fine with the dishes up higher right away.
