a list of stupid questions, please reply

Post by lutino »

Hi, this may sound like a stupid question but my IRNs pupils dilate when he/she is eating certain foods, does yours? Does this mean he/she is enjoying it? lol.
Also my IRN is new, 5months, but i leave him/her out of the cage most of the day. Is this ok? will this affect behaviour and learning in any way?
Another question, the only time he/she squaks usually, is when he/she thinks no one is around. Does this means my attention is wanted or is he/she happy that im gone! lol :?

Don't worry, its normal for IRNs pupils to dilate. Its a sign of many things. Excitement, anger, enjoyment.. I think your IRN is enjoying his/her food!
When a birds pupils dilate its called 'pinning' or 'flashing' when they flash.

Its sometimes usefull to understand a birds body language to better understand their moods.

Alot of us here leave our birds out all day. But its a good idea to make your home as 'bird proof' as possible. Meaning removing or fixing anything that could harm your bird. They are inquisitive and can get into all sorts of trouble. My 2 naughtys raid my kitchen when I'm out of the room!

Your IRN might be calling you back. Birds are attention seekers.

Yes, it’s very normal for their eyes to pin. Remember this, Ringnecks are not able to make facial expressions like humans and I often tell people the facial expressions are in the eyes. Have you ever seen an angry ringneck? I mean, the emotions are very obvious for each mood. For example, Archimedes will quickly pin his eyes at me when I walk into the room. They pin for only a second—I equate this with a smile. It’s like he is just glancing over to smile at me and let me know he made contact with me. When he does not want to be bothered his eyes pin to a tiny dot and they stay that way until I go away—it’s his way of saying can you please leave me alone. Or when he is talking he really pins his eye;s however, they are pinned in a gentle manner. When he is eating food, his eyes don’t pin, but I can see them focus like a lens while he tries to look forward.

Hope this helps,

Here is Archimedes focusing like a camera lens...it's not pinning though but can be confused.
