since we brought jade home its starting to smell like birds. i clean out all the cages everyday and constantly wipe up the mess and it still smells like baby birds! is it alright to use any air freshners around birds/ in the same room as them? glade plug-ins? oust air sanatizer? any suggestions?

Air fresheners are not good to use around birds. Give the bird a bath every day. Amazons always have a paticular odor to them some people like it some don't. They always smell musty to me especially when they are excited. I cut up orange peels and put them in water on the stove and bring to boil then turn it off and let set. The house always smells like oranges.

No I wouldn't use airfreshners either, we don't even burn incence or scented candles, birds have very delicate respiratory systems.

Maybe you could find dried herbs, mint etc. potpouri and sprinkle that around the floor of the cage. I use vinegar (apple cider preferably) in the water to clean my bird room floor and cages, it seems to get rid of alot of the odours. Maybe pots of growing fresh herbs near a window also to help cleanse the air ? just some thoughts.

I wouldnt know what an amazon smelt like. But I love Jibs smell after a bath. Birdy fresh! hehe.

If you have visitors coming round slice a few oranges and lemons in half and place them in a bowl in the room, these will freshen the air nicely.

I know birds can get smelly, especially if their cage or equipment is not washed. Every weekend, make a bleach solution of 1 part bleach to 9 parts water and wash everything down. Perches should be scrubbed as well; however, the wood needs to air dry completely before it can be introduced back into the cage. I know this seems like a lot of work, but this will cut back on any smell.

Secondly, keep the windows open in your house. Letting the air pass through is very healthy for you and your birds. This removes any stagnant air and brings in fresh crisp air.

As the other members has mentioned, try to use other alternatives to masking any smells. Cinnamon sticks work wonders too!

The most crucial part, if you feed pellets or fruits/ veggies, have a feeding station away form the cage—such as the table. This means you should keep seeds inside the cage and offer all other food types away from the cage. Fruit can easily stick to the bars and start to decay and pellets will naturally emit smells-- so keep them in an air tight container and store them in fridge.
