My eight week old baby is in a cage that is 40 high, by 20 deep, by 23 wide. Is this far too large? I've had him a week Saturday.

I try to avoid being impulsive, but this one got me:) I do believe he's going to be a much smaller bird than I imagined. We have three large TOO's and two CAG's in a bird room. We just open cage doors and let everybody play at the same time. It's never been a problem.

Obviously this plan will not work for baby Breezer. Should I have him in a smaller cage to assist with his weaning and put him in the living room with us, instead of in the bird room? I'm thinking he's never going to get to be out with my large birds anyway. My Goffins is a terrorist on good days:) I wouldn't want her pushy buns any where near the IRN.

Don't know that the size of the cage is the issue.

I would definately keep the cage out with you for a while. One for quarantine purposes and two, to let your baby grow up a little first so he is not so scared and daunted by everything. It can actually shock some birds to be suddenly placed amongst a full on flock, especially larger species.

Let him grow up a little and become accustom to you and just the sounds of your other birds first. At the same time your other birds will get to hear your IRN and get use to his sounds before you actually introduce him to the flock. Makes for a better introduction to do things slowly, (as far as I have read and heard and experienced so far)

My Pickle (one of the babies I hand raised) was about 4 months old when we introduced him to the flock. Firstly they had supervised play with each other out of the cage in a non territorial envirnoment, so that they could get familiarised and slowly over time and with supervision were allowed to play together in the bird room. Now Jordan and pickle sleep together in the same cage no probs. And pickle joins the flock for free play. Slow process though.

How long has he been home with you ? not long by the sounds of it.

I don't think there is such a thing as too big a cage, unless the bars are far enough apart for a head to slip through.
