hi im from melbourne vic and have just adopted a green irn
he/she was a rehome the people couldnt look after her any more, she/he is my second ringneck i lost my baby last year.

if anyone can help me with the sex of this baby who is aprox 17 months old id be greatfull, the previous owners thought she might be female, but i am unsure, my previous irn was female and as a great talker i miss her so much
this one has no ring yet but i think there is a slight ring there time will tell i guess.my other bird i got a lot older so i havent seen the changes they go through to be able to compare shes a cheeky thing and does some wierd behaviour particulary to my oldest daughter,
she will come up to front of cage and pin her eyes lift her wings fan her tail, and make strange clicking noises? can anyone explain this behaviour, my daughter will talk to her and sit ther , but as soon as she gos aeay from cgae the bird screams the house down..lol

she was supposedly hand reared but the previous owners said they couldnt get near her anymore, i did explain to them the bluffing stage but they wernt prepared to put up with it and decided to rehome her ( lucky me) she is a lot better but wont sit with you on shoulder hand etc,
she will sit close but not close enough to touch her, but loves her time out of cage exploring and flying around, but i wil wrk with her everyday to get her trust and be bale to handle her, i am determined, any tips would be gratfully accepted !!!

Welcome to this forum and congratulations on your new adoption. I am sorry to hear you lost your last female ringneck. I don’t know what I would do if I lost my dear Archimedes.

Also, as you mentioned in your post that your ringneck clucks. This is female behavior; however, I have been fooled a few times. You can never be too sure unless you DNA sex the bird. Let me give you an example, our dear little DATSUN, our mod’s ringneck, exhibited lots of female behavior. I was sure it was a female and then DATSUN turned out to be a stunning little boy. So with that information, I guess it’s safe to say that every ringneck displays and pins different—usually a male will fan his tail, pin his eyes, open his wings slightly, and bow or pull his head backwards. A female ringneck will slightly open her wings, arch her head back and pin her eye—all the while making clucking sounds. That should help you somewhat decipher the sex of your bird. If your bird is a boy, a ring should start to come in 17 to 18 months. Some males get their ring around their 3rd year—it really depends on the bird.

Also, you mentioned the ringneck was biting the previous owners. This is not bluffing because bluffing is a phase usually after weaning. At 17 months, your ringneck should start getting a surge of hormones and this biting can usually be attributed to sexual maturity. They key is to stay focused and ignore any unwanted behavior. Only use your voice and give affection to your ringneck when he/she is doing what you wish. Also be gentile, and though having a biting bird can be frustrating, remember to remain calm and completely ignore any unwanted behavior.

Congrads on adopting lil hodgie. As you probebly know, gaining their trust takes some time and patience but oh soo worth every minute. Sorry to hear about your loss.

Yep, DNA is really the only way to tell a IRNs sex before maturity. As Imran said, some can 'trick' you.

Yep, what Imran said, completely ignore the biting and bad behaviour. Stay calm, might take some self discipline. I know I had to learn how to not scream 'Owwwww!'.

thnks so much , the little bugger has stil got me confused will see how i go and be patient and wait to see if that ring appears, no that it matters, im in love with this little bird who is a real character, i will be patient and try to be calm..lol ohh i forgot to add, he/she only does this strange behaviour ( pinning, wings, tail ,head and noises) to myslef and my oldest daughter

he/she does do the clucking noise but not the back arching is more of pulling head backwards.

her funny little noises and car alarm sounds.. are now being coppied by my teil..lol i also have budgies rainbow lorrikeets and a cockateil..
and almost finished hand rearng baby budgies who are just the cutest little things. ill post more pics of hodgie and the other birds if you would like to see them

Hodgie sounds like shes happy to see you and your daughter. Displays like what you might be seeing can be excitement to see you. In an older bird it can be a mating dance. But, pinning, puffed up and growling means shes angry.

My mum had tiels once and they would copy every sound in the house. Even did a fire engine or ambulance, theyd go 'wee ooo wee oo wee oo' all the time. Funny lil buggas! My Jibby 'kisses' everything.

Welcome to the site, glad you are settling in with your new fid well. The pulling head back sounds very much like female. But again as everyone Says, to be 100% sure DNA is the only way.
