I will be buying a Mauve ringneck soon. My question is; Do you think it would be best to buy a male or a female? I am looking to get Cobalt babies. Should I get a Blue or Pallid Blue mate for it? I appreciate your (and everyone else's) help.

A Mauve paired to a Blue will give you all Cobalt babies.
It doesn't matter what sex the Mauve is.

If you could get a Pallid Blue Cock to pair with a Mauve Hen, that would be fantastic.
You'd get Cobalt/Pallid Cocks and Pallid Cobalt Hens

How much are cobalts in the US (500?) and how likely am I to find a breeder? Being in FL, I would think my changes would be pretty good.

I would *maybe* sacrifice looking for a gray for a plum.

Rick Jordan from Hillcountry Aviaries Here in Texas has a great stock.

Richard Cusick from Outback Aviaries in California also has beautiful birds.

Sorry, I meant a Pallid Mauve. Would the babies mutations change, with either a Blue or Pallid Blue mate? Would I still get Cobalt/Pallid and Pallid Cobalt babies?

So you're buying a Pallid Mauve? Try and get a Pallid Mauve Cock.

Pallid Mauve Cock x Blue Hen
=Cobalt/Pallid Cocks
=Pallid Cobalt Hens

Pallid Mauve Cock x Pallid Blue Hen
=Pallid Cobalt Cocks and hens

Do you know of any place that has pics of a male Pallid Cobalt IRN? I've never seen one. Thanks Jeremy!! You're a big help.

Oooh... you are a troublemaker Rick! I may have to take a little drive down to Fallbrook (better do it while I am on my self imposed new birdie moratorium)

Deon Smith's site has nice photos of Cobalt Pallids (Lacewings), Cobalts, Mauves, and Violets. http://www.sunbird1.co.za/my_ringnecks.htm

Out of curiosity and if you don't mind, from whom and how much are you buying Mauve Pallids for? Please be careful when buying these high-priced birds as I have seen one too many newbies get burned. Always get close-banded birds and get references (also check the references).

The American Cobalt pictured at Richard Cusick's site is actually what they call the Violet Blue nowadays. It's the American equivalent of the European Cobalt.
