Beak trimming/too long

Post by Elizabeth »

I know; I have a Lorikeet for 5 weeks and he isn't hand tame. His upper mandible is growing longer, despite him picking the bark off his avairy tree. I'm looking for some excellent advice on ways i can get my bird to trim his beak by himself. If he eventually can't eat id forse myself to catch him and take him to the vet - but in the meantime i'm hoping id doesn't reach that.

Can you help me somehow? Handling isn't preferable because he will rip my fingers (just like an untame IRN) and he is nervous.

Get some calcium/concrete perches, cuttlebone, lots of chew toys. Also overgrown beaks can mean vitamin deficancies.

What everyone else said... remember, their beaks blacken a bit at the end... normal.

A trimmed beak aint gonna help in a bite but the vet should refuse to do it... test him.

Thanks,

Lorikeets naturally have a hooked upper mandible, but his is about 2 cm longer than it was 5 weeks ago when i got him.

The tip is lighter than the red that is his beak

He is on a lorikeet powder and has corn, apple and grapes every day.

His feathering is immaculate, he's of a medium size and his beak is very clean.

i don't think they eat cuttlefish bone.

So you think that vets won't do it? do you ever trim your birds? do you think i may be overreacting, his bite is fine, just the tip of the upper mandible is a little longer than normal.

Do you think i should worry? its only 2cm longer.

This is text and Im a natural smart ****. Its funny in real, sarcastic in text... sorry. Dont read it that way.

Wild birds dont fly by the vet for a trim. I think he will be fine just as he is, imho.
