Hello all,
Just looking for some thoughts on adding a baby sun conure to the family. Havent made to many recent posts but I have been reading them all! Our ringneck was bought wild~very wild~ He has come along way in that he will step up now and ride on our hand and shoulder for a very short while! We have been working with him for 2 years now. No petting or cuddling with this guy.Not interested in taking treats from our hand either.Go figure he was not hand raised! Really just seems like he dosent want to be bothered by us. He is very happy though. Cage is always open he plays all day up there and is becoming a good little whistler.

Would like to here some advice on getting a sun conure. We have found a sweet 6 month old baby sunny and wonder if they could ever be friends. Of course they would have seperate cages but must they be in seperate rooms while we are at work? Do you think that Endo will learn to be loved on seeing that the sunny would be getting cuddled by us? Or do you think he will be jealous? Or not care at all?

I think it could go either way. Never can be sure how a bird will react.
You need to be prepared for the fact that they will be jealous of each other and will require supervision and not be left alone together for life. If you get better than that be grateful and happy and go with it.

But you can't really get another bird with the assumption they will get along. Even birds of the same breed and opposite sex sometimes just won't take to each other and then sometimes the unlikeliest pairs will form an unbreakable bond.

But again, wouldn't get a bird assuming everything will be ok. If you decide on the sun conure take it knowing you may have feuding birds for life and then work to make it the best relationship it will be.

By the way I think sun conures are absolutely gorgeous little creatures and have part monkey in them.

Most of our ringnecks, at best, tolerate another ringneck. I said tolerate... not enjoy or love.

Some of the pairs have a higher level of toleration but there arent any love affair between them, that I can think of.

Secondly, it doesnt matter if they get along or not. You cant leave them unattended anyway.

One of my ringnecks is in love with a tiel, I mean actual love. He lives for his Peaches Girl and they are always beside each other. He controls her every move. Feeds her when he feels she needs to be fed. She steps onto his back and he walks her around so proudly. Lil ol tiel.

Then I have another ringneck. They cant even stand eachother enough to share the same stand. Though, the new ringneck isnt the problem. Its my smaller ringneck thats terrified of the bigger ringneck.

Some of us just cant take any role if the Alpha role isnt available any longer. Thats Baby... ego!

I think my point is:
Ringnecks, in my experience, like other species but there seems to be room in one home for one ringneck. But, that doesnt apply to ALL ringnecks.

In other words, if you want them to play together, youre best bet is with the Sun. Besides, never can go wrong with a Sun!

Thank you so much. I think that he will be fine considering the fact that he really doesnt seem to care about us holding him all the time anyways. At most maybe he will learn to be loved and held by us when seeing how much the new baby enjoys it!

Should we keep them in seperate rooms or just keep the babies cage door shut when we are not there? Endo always has his door open so I would hate to shut it during the day.

I would leave things as you do them now, just lock the babies cage when you are away.

Easier for a baby to learn 'the way its gonna be' than an established fid.
