Hi peoples,
My new IRN is missing his tail!!! I thought it was because he was a baby (in my newbie ignorance) but now I find out he is 1 year. Could someone please tell me why would he not have a tail? and how long untill it will grow back?

Hun:
Settle down, yes, he is missing his tail. We will refer to him as duck butt til he recovers it.
Hun, your bird looks fine. He may be a rough houser and have been in a cage that was too small, therefore, tearing up his tail.
I say this because otherwise he looks great. Wide eyes, alert, nice plumage everywhere else.
Anyone see anything Im missing?

He looks good and healthy in the picture. Where did you get him? Did they have a dog or cat that could of gotten his tail? I had a cockatiel 25 years ago and he got out in the neighborhood, we found him when we realized it was what the neighborhood dogs were after and they had pulled his tail feathers out. He looked like that and survived the trip away from home and his dog encounter quite nicely. Took a while for the tail to grow back in.

Mik has hit the nail on the head.
Looks like his tail has been rubbing up the bars of a small cage and wearing the feathers out.
The tail feathers will grow back in his next moult. Probably in another 6-12 months

Hi!
Mom of a former "duck butt" here!
The tails grow back when they moult. Busey now has a pretty tail. Everything will be fine.
Busey's tail was all broken off from him jumping and playing hard. His 1 year moult brought it all back!

Awww...a duckie butt...how cute! Yep...sounds like your bird plays hard...either that or as silly as this sounds something scared them out of him. YES this does happen! Birds can be like lizards and remove one or all of their feathers if need be
