Please be really really careful with your birds toys espically if they have rope thats been chewed on or if it has strings hanging down or tassels. My husband and I went to a petsmart today and had to get an associate because one of the little parakeets had hung himsef on some strings. Yes, he was dead and just hanging there. The string was wrapped around his neck. We are guessing it happened overnight cause we got there right after they opened, but it just broke my heart. I stayed around to make sure they threw the toy away, but please just be careful, I couldnt imagine this happening to one of my babies, cause this is so preventable!

Thanks for that post. Wow. Hit home. My bird has chewed his rope perch into very long strings and that thought never occured to me.
I am walking to the cage this minute to remove his beloved strings.
What an awful story. I am grateful I or my children didnt see that and very sorry you did. Images tend to burn into my brain so Im careful as to what I expose myself to. You dont expect that walking into a pet store. Thats our happy place!

Yes, it was very hard to see, I thought I was going to vomit. I am like you images burn into my brain, all I can see is that poor bird hanging there from that string. I just thought posting this could maybe save a bird from going through that. Im going to be paranoid for a while with what I leave in the cages overnight.

Just another short warning. the strings on the mini blinds. Please make sure if your bird is out and able to get to them you have them short enough that he can't get it around his neck and make sure his cage is not so close that he can get his beak out and get hold of one and pull it through the bars and get it around his neck. Odd how my Nila will always go for a long string. Wonder what in nature would resemble that that makes it so attractive to them?
