Do the feaathers all over the body get kind of ruffly and not lay smoothly? Or is this a baby's feathers thing? Thanks

Baby is looking ratty right now, actually. God they can go from perfect to rag dolls in days.

He only has 4 tail feathers left so I am assuming this is his first good molt, he had a baby one.

No pricklies yet... just rattty looking and getting the black under his beak, around his neck.

Alot of white, kinda pin like stuff comes from him when he scratches. Bigger than dust but not dry like skin.

That white stuff Mik would be the keratin sheaves that cover the new feathers...Prinny is looking terrible with a capital T right now...scruffy and pitiful...but she's getting plenty of showers to help with the itch

So that white stuff is good?

And increase Baby's showers daily would make him more comfortable?

Wonder if that would make the molt quicker.

If Baby *is* a boy... he will definately ring out at a yr and a half? Ive heard it can take 3 yrs. Wonder what the average is?

Yep...the white stuff means the feather sheaves are coming off well. Baths generally help relieve itch and uncomfortableness for our fids...

I think the ring can take up to 3 years but most get it by 2

Bathing and Molting

Both of mine are molting some wing and tail feathers. I am glad though, because both of these poor birds had such a baaaaaaad wing clipping (before I owned them) and poor Baby Girl didn't even have a tail until now....I mist both my babies with 1/3 aloe vera juice and 2/3 warm water....the aloe is very soothing for them and is completely nontoxic...recommend for all birds ...you can find it at Wal Mart in the laxative/stomach area...make sure you get the 99% and make sure it not the flavored kind, wouldn't want to see a grape flavored purple bird lol

This is Baby's first real moult. He had one at about 5 months that looked bad but passed quickly. This one, he is getting rid of all of his feathers... tail and all.

Might get that ring! Dont think so though because it is only a tad black now. -shrug-
